Yann LeCun Vs Gary Marcus

Yann LeCun Vs Gary Marcus

Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

Gary Marcus and Yann LeCun are both prominent figures in the field of artificial intelligence. However, they have historically sharply different perspectives and opinions on the development and future of AI, specifically deep learning.

LeCun is famous for his pioneering work in the field of deep learning and computer vision. As a renowned artificial intelligence researcher and professor at New York University and the Head of Facebook AI Research; LeCun has made significant contributions to the development of convolutional neural networks; which are now widely used in a variety of applications such as image and speech recognition; and considered a godfather of Ai & deep learning.

Marcus is a critic of deep learning, the dominant approach in AI research today.

Furthermore, Marcus advocates for a more diverse and hybrid approach to AI development that incorporates symbolic reasoning and other forms of artificial intelligence.

Marcus is an Emeritus professor of psychology at New York University and the CEO and founder of Geometric Intelligence, a machine learning company acquired by Uber. He is also the author of several books on AI, including “The Algebraic Mind” and “Kluge: The Haphazard Evolution of the Human Mind”.

Marcus believes; “that deep learning must be supplemented by other techniques if we are to reach artificial general intelligence.”

On the other hand, Yann LeCun, as a leading researcher in deep learning and a strong advocate for this approach; has criticized Marcus’ views as becoming misguided and misinformed. LeCun said of Marcus that “the number of valuable recommendations ever made by Gary Marcus is exactly zero.”

Marcus writes on his blog

Yann LeCun battled me on every step of the journey, most notably in this rather bellicose and somewhat condescending “I said the problem wasn’t math per se, but that large language models didn’t represent robust world models of how events fold over time; I stand by this 100% even today. rear-guard battle” tweet, in which he said that all my concerns had long since been addressed.

But, on the subject of the feud. Professor LeCun told Rebellion; “My opinion has been very consistent, but he claims I “pivoted” from being opposed to his opinion to agreeing with it.”

Marcus told Rebellion; “Where the debate will go next, nobody knows… lately LeCun seems to be coming closer to my position.”

Rebellion sat down with Yann LeCun for an interview, please see our piece: Yann LeCun On Reinforcement Learning, Deep Learning & Self Driving

Gary Marcus was kind enough to attend Rebellion Research’s Quant & Ai conference at MIT last December: Dr. Gary Marcus & Dr. Ruchir Puri Fireside Chat: Rebooting Ai

Rebellion Research’s original economic prediction engine was a deep learning system as our co-founder Dr. Spencer Greenberg became taught by LeCun at Courant. However, we have since switched to a Reinforced Deep Learning model, one that is much more sensitive to superficial data.
