Will Tesla have their own phone? Twitter Layoffs & Elon’s Ambitions

Technology / Business

Twitter’s massive layoffs and Elon’s heavy handed approach with engineers to work ‘extremely hardcore’ has been in the headlines for the past few days.

Elon wants to make Twitter an engineering focused company. His success with Tesla and SpaceX against all odds is proof that he knows how to build engineering teams better than anyone else on this planet.

Elon fired half of the Twitter work force that was not writing code. It seems to me that instead of making a decision for the remaining group, he is purposely taking a tough stance to scare away the people who are not willing to accept his challenge.

Anyone who has worked on complex engineering projects knows that you cannot solve difficult engineering problems by simply assigning more engineers to it. Most of the heavy lifting in these hardcore projects is usually done by a few highly committed and motivated developers. Elon is well aware of this reality. And probably believes that the core group left behind will do more than the entire Twitter workforce of the past combined.

There are two other interesting facts here:

1) Elon was a founding investor of the OpenAI project. OpenAi has trained one of the most sophisticated AI models for Natural Language Processing. He can use the power of OpenAI to analyze Twitter’s treasure trove of data better than a large army of humans.

2) Elon owns more communication satellites than all of the world’s governments combined. This number will continue to grow in coming months and years specially when the Starship will become operational.

Elon has already expressed his desire to make Twitter more than just a text based messaging app. He also wants to include other services such as payment processing and video delivery etc.

I will not be surprised if Elon announces a Twitter Satellite Phone. In addition, with a Twitter Operating System. Moreover, to directly compete with Apple, Google, Facebook and many other technology giants.

I love my iPhone but I will be willing to part with it for the Twitter Phone especially if it also helps me slash my monthly cellular bill.

Lastly, how much will you be willing to pay for a Twitter Phone? One that will work anywhere in the world and will allow you to get rid of your wallet?
