Why Your Employees Are Your Best Asset

Why Your Employees Are Your Best Asset

Business

It sounds odd to talk about people in terms of assets, but the employees you have within your company add value to everything you do. Often though, the view is that profits, products, and things like R&D are the true assets.

However, it is the people that are behind the business that offer more value than you might think. Let’s take a look at how the people in your company are the real assets and why they are worth more than any amount of profit.

First Customers

Your employees are actually the first customers of your business. If they are not being treated well, they will not perform their tasks sufficiently. This means if you are not giving them the right service, you are letting down your first set of customers – and that will be felt by outside customers.

Always aim to make sure that you treat your employees like you would a customer – look for ways to make them feel included, supported, and compensated.

Face

As a company grows, it is less and less likely that customers will see the management or the owner. Employees take over many of the customer-facing roles and become the true face of the company.

Aside from being the ones to respond to emails and phone calls and speak to customers face-to-face, they represent you too.

Unhappy employees, even those who are contracted otherwise, do speak about the company. If they are unhappy, they will tell other people, and not only will people not want to work for you, but people won’t want to buy your services or products either.

Skills

No manager has the same amount and depth of skills as a group of employees. Some of them will be specialists in their areas, and others will have years of experience. All of this combined means that the workforce that you have put together is more skilled and powerful than you might give them credit for. This goes double if you run a company in an industry where there are education and experience requirements and even train your staff using companies like healthcare educational solutions or SCRUM to improve their skills further.

One of the biggest mistakes people in higher roles make is that they forget that these highly skilled, experienced people are running and managing a specific part of the company. The second biggest is letting highly skilled, well-trained people leave without looking to retain any knowledge from them.

Profit Contribution

Big profits are nice, and having great products and services helps a lot. But it is the sales team and the people-facing employees that secure those sales. They upsell and make sure that customers feel taken care of and that they get the product or service that they want and need.

Excellent customer service, easy purchase process, questions answered, returns and exchanges, product information, and more come from the employees. All of that is invaluable, and what it means is that your employees have a significant impact on your profits.

Management

Without employees, there is no one to delegate tasks to and make sure that the business keeps running well. Instead, you would be a single person trying to manage the tasks of a whole team. Having employees means that you can delegate tasks, and because everyone has a part to play, the business will run well.

Nurturing

While management will have a lot to do with the shaping of the company and forging a path to success. It is the employees that take up the mantle of nurturing everything to make that happen. They adhere to the values and teach them to new employees; they shape how customers see you, as well as build a community amongst themselves.

Employees put many hours of their day into a company, and in many cases, they get the best and most energy from the employee too. Without employees who do this, your company will be stagnant.

Value

There is absolutely no replacement for a great employee. They bring their own personal touch to the role and work hard to fulfill their obligations. In many cases, they go above and beyond the job description (although this should be something that is given recognition).

Continuity

At one point, management and owners step down or change hands – and it is the collective employees that will keep the business running from a customer point of view without missing a beat. They are trained in their role, and they will keep newcomers on track too.
