Principal component analysis uses the power of eigenvectors and eigenvalues for reducing the number of features in a data set, however still keeping most of the variance.

Eigenvalues are the special set of scalar values that is associated with the set of linear equations most probably in the matrix equations. The eigenvectors are also termed as characteristic roots. It is a non-zero vector that can become changed at most by its scalar factor after the application of linear transformations.

The transformation matrix A = preserves the direction of purple vectors parallel to vλ=1 = [1 −1]T and blue vectors parallel to vλ=3 = [1 1]T. The red vectors are not parallel to either eigenvector. So, their directions are changed by the transformation. The lengths of the purple vectors are unchanged after the transformation (due to their eigenvalue of 1), while blue vectors are three times the length of the original (due to their eigenvalue of 3).

What is the role of eigenvalues and eigenvectors in machine learning?

In data science, it is important to choose features for analysis which represent large numbers of data points and give lots of information. Moreover, picking the features which represent that data and eliminating less useful features is an example of dimensionality reduction.

We can use eigenvalues and vectors to identify those dimensions which are most useful and prioritize our computational resources toward them.

Furthermore, eigenvalues are important in data science for several specific reasons:

Principal Component Analysis or (PCA), a technique used in data analysis for reducing the dimensionality of a dataset. As a result of identifying the most important features, or principal components. Those features that explain the variance in the data. The principal components become obtained by calculating the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the covariance matrix of the data.

Eigenvalues and eigenvectors play an important role in linear algebra. Which is the foundation of many data science techniques. For example, matrix factorization, singular value decomposition (SVD), and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods rely on eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

Eigenvalues become used in network analysis to measure the importance of nodes in a graph. For example, the PageRank algorithm, used by Google to rank web pages, is based on the eigenvector centrality of nodes in a network.

Eigenvalues become used in image processing to compress and store images in a compact form. The eigenvalues of a covariance matrix become used to identify the most important features of an image. Which can then become used to reconstruct the original image with minimal loss of information.

Overall, eigenvalues are a powerful mathematical tool. Used in many areas of data science to analyze, model, and interpret complex data.
