Who is hosting the 2026 World Cup?

Who is hosting the 2026 World Cup?

The 2026 World Cup will take place in three North American countries: the United States, Mexico, and Canada. This will be the first time that the tournament is hosted by three different nations and it will be the very first time that the event will be contested in Canada.

Over time and with economic development, the idea of hosting the Olympic Games and electing the host country has been optimized and progressed a little. When we look back at the Olympic Games throughout the 20th century, we see that the vast majority of countries at that time were not willing to be elected as hosts. For example, the 1968 Mexico city Olympics were overshadowed by political unrest and acts of violence; the 1976 Montreal games cost 9.2 times more than originally budgeted, leaving the city with a debt that would take thirty years to be paid off. But there are many countries that have gained a lot from hosting the games after their economies have developed, like television, social media revenue, short-term employment gains.

After reading the book ‘Circus Maximus’, I got an answer on whether the Olympics can bring positive economic impact to the host country and how to solve the huge losses of the host country. The Olympics are rapidly losing their economic viability for the host nations. The best solution mentioned in this book is a truly global Olympics. Where each sport becomes played simultaneously in a different country. This would drastically reduce the need for infrastructure investment and give every country the chance to be the host. To enhance local interest, each discipline might become held in the area. Or city where the sport finds itself most popular.

FIFA announced in the news that the 2026 event will be the first edition of football’s showpiece to feature 48 teams across three countries (Canada, U.S.,and Mexico ). It also analyzed each potential host city based on factors including its local and state infrastructure, accessibility, human rights, stadium infrastructure, venues for fan festivals, and training grounds.

According to a study conducted by The Boston Consulting Group, a top global management consulting firm, hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup could result in more than $5 billion in short-term economic activity, including supporting about 40,000 jobs and more than $1 billion in additional worker earnings across North America.

How Profitable is the World Cup?

And this study also further estimates that each host city can expect to have approximately $16 to $620 million in incremental economic development revenue, this results in a net benefit of $9 to $480 million per city after taking into account potential public costs. Head of the Canadian bid said, “As this study shows, our first ever 48 team FIFA World Cup will benefit all three of our countries and the global soccer community”. The three countries collectively represent the greatest commercial market in the world, giving the stability required to advance international soccer in the years to come while also providing host cities and FIFA with the chance to enjoy major economic and social benefits.

As to whether the U.S., Mexico, and Canada should continue to host the World Cup?

There is no doubt that US has ability to host a very successful Cup. Not to mention the possible future of the World Cup will become the form of several countries jointly bid. The United States doesn’t need to gain the same benefits from hosting a World Cup as Qatar does. The last two hosts South Africa, Brazil and the next host Qatar had no stadiums for the cup. They had to become built from scratch. The situation in the US is totally different, the facilities find themselves already in place and are in current use and also will become used in the future.

Moreover, there won’t be any issues about turf. Now FIFA accepts the use of Field Turf for the matches, stuff that most stadiums in the USA now have. For Mexico, acquired a great deal of experience when organizing the FIFA Men’s World Cup 1970 and 1986. Moreover, many experiences should become accumulated, so the infrastructure also already exists. Also for Canada, there is no place in the world that will respond to the world cup with more enthusiasm and more energy. Those three countries bidding to host the World Cup must provide FIFA with a guaranteed revenue figure, and it’s much more profitable to share that in three ways rather than one.

Let’s take a look at the history of the World Cup!
