Where Is Online Sports Betting Legal in the USA in 2022?

There has been an increase in the number of states catching up to the rest of the country as legal sports betting keeps spreading throughout the country. Bills are being drafted for retail and mobile betting.

Whether you’re planning a vacation or just curious about where your local state stands in the USA, here’s what you need to know about states that have already made sports betting legal:

New York

Although New York allowed in-person sports betting in 2013, there was a gap in the activity until the Supreme Court’s judgment in 2018, when in-person sports betting resumed. On January 8, 2022, online sports betting was made legal in New York.

Arizona

In April 2021, Arizona’s online sports betting bill was signed into law, allowing for mobile and in-stadium sportsbooks to open at the start of the NFL season. In all, 20 online platforms and 20 retail locations were influenced by this regulation.

Pennsylvania

Only Nevada and New Jersey have handled more sports bets per month than Pennsylvania, which takes both mobile and in-person wagers and has established a maximum of 14 operating licenses for the first year of legal sports betting. As online betting was made legal in 2019, bettors can place their bets on any PA sports betting app.

Colorado

Colorado is all in with betting, and as of September 2020, it was one of just five states to record more than $200 million in monthly wagering handles, making it one of the most popular online sports betting destinations in the country.

Nevada

While Nevada has long had a thriving in-person betting industry, the state’s online casinos now require players to sign up for their mobile apps in order to place bets.

Delaware

Delaware was among the first states to legalize single-game wagering in 2018, after Nevada, which had already done so. After all these years, the state’s only three onsite choices still don’t possess permits for online sports wagering.

Connecticut

When sports betting became allowed in 2020. The state’s betting handle grew to almost $200 million per month. In the near future, experts predict over 24 digital sportsbooks coming into existence in the state. Making it a likely long-term fixture in the nation’s sports gambling arena.

Indiana

Online or mobile casino registration was made possible on March 5, 2022, when the necessity for in-person registration was abolished. It is also a result of this shift that more online-only sportsbooks are now able to serve players in Indiana.

Florida

Legal and logistical obstacles have delayed the state’s complete rollout of sports betting, which was permitted in 2021. As part of a deal between the state and authority, a sportsbook launched on November 1, 2021, in Florida.

Illinois

Retail sportsbooks have been open in Illinois since March 2020, and the first sports betting websites and apps were available in the state in June 2020. In June 2021, the governor signed legislation making sports betting legal in Prairie State for the first time.

Louisiana

Retail betting started in the state last month, and online sportsbook registration has begun. A total of 56 of the 64 parishes in Louisiana legalized both mobile and in-person sports betting, meaning individuals who live in the eight parishes that didn’t will have to go to a neighboring state to place a wager.

Michigan

Michigan’s first two casinos opened in March 2020, when a “Lawful Sports Betting Act” was passed, paving the door for both online and in-person sports gambling. Since then, Michigan has been considered a state that may prosper and succeed from online gambling, which started in January 2021.

New Jersey

Today more than 80% of its wagers are made online. Even if there are still casinos. Most prefer to bet online. However, in-state college teams and events that occur inside state boundaries. Are not permitted to be bet on.

Iowa

A prior regulation requiring in-person registration had expired in January 2021; thus, online sports betting had a head start in Iowa when it became legal on August 15, 2019. There are no professional sports teams in the state; however, the license costs are among the lowest in the country.

West Virginia

The Mountain state has been placing bets since August 2021, when it became the fifth state in the United States to authorize sports betting.

Oregon

For online legal sports betting in Oregon, there is just one option, and that is via the online lottery app. Retail sportsbooks are currently only available at a few Native American casinos.

Tennessee

There are no retail betting casinos in the state. Thus, people can only wager online. In November 2020, online sportsbooks started operating in the state. Signup bonuses abound for sports betting apps in TN. Making it easy for new customers to get started betting.

Wyoming

As of September 1, 2021, the state exclusively accepted mobile sports bets, unlike the other jurisdictions with both online and retail locations for betting. In addition to Tennessee, it is the only state to provide just online sports betting and no retail choices.

Along with the above states, online sports betting is legal in Mississippi, New Hampshire, Washington DC, Rhode Island, and Virginia.
