When was the last time the Intrepid moved?

The USS Intrepid, an aircraft carrier that is now a museum located in New York City.
The Intrepid aircraft carrier received a renovation in 2006 at a shipyard in Bayonne, New Jersey. The renovation was part of a $60 million project to improve the ship and the surrounding facilities and infrastructure.
Moving the 27,000-ton ship was a major engineering feat! Requiring the use of four tugboats, a team of divers, and a sophisticated ballasting system to ensure that the ship remained stable during the move.

The process took several hours and involved shifting the ship’s weight by pumping water in and out of various ballast tanks.
However, before the USS Intrepid became moved, workers had to remove several feet of silt and sediment from the riverbed where the ship was located. The silt had accumulated over the years and made it difficult to move the ship safely.
To remove the silt, workers used a process called dredging. Dredging involves using specialized equipment to excavate and remove sediment from the bottom of a body of water. In the case of the Intrepid, a dredging barge scooped up the sediment and deposit it into a nearby container barge.

The dredging process needed careful monitoring to ensure that it did not damage the ship or the surrounding environment. Workers used sonar and other instruments to map the riverbed and identify areas that needed to become dredged. In addition, they also used silt curtains and other devices to prevent sediment from spreading to other parts of the river.

Once the ship reached its new location, it opened to the public while the renovation project became completed.

During the renovation, the ship’s hull became repaired and repainted. In addition, the interior of the ship became updated to improve accessibility and visitor experience. The renovation also included the construction of a new pier to accommodate the ship and other vessels.
In addition to the work on the ship itself, the project also involved the development of new exhibits and educational programs for visitors. Lastly, the renovated Intrepid Museum reopened to the public in November 2008, with new exhibits and interactive displays that showcase the history of the ship and the role it played in American military history.
