With its “cyberpunk” styling, the Tesla Cybertruck was launched on November 22, 2019, in Los Angeles, California. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, previously said the electric pickup truck was inspired by the 1982 science fiction film Blade Runner.

Tesla dominates the global electric vehicle market and led the trend of electric cars for years with the popular Model X and Model S and other products. But Cybertruck is the first time Tesla enters the pickup truck area. Cybertruck is an electric pickup truck with a length of 5.88 meters, a width of 2.03 meters, and a height of 1.93 meters. Every detail of the Cybertruck, from its stainless steel “exoskeleton” to its angular shape to its “tempered glass” windows, is stunning.

Three Cybertruck models are available:
  • A single-motor rear-wheel drive.
  • A dual-motor all-wheel drive.
  • And lastly, a triple-motor all-wheel drive.

They have a range of between 250 and 500 miles. And the acceleration time, Tesla’s official website announced the electric pickup truck 3 versions from 0 acceleration to 60 miles is between 2.9 seconds to 6.5 seconds, including a single-motor rear-wheel drive version of 6.5 seconds, a dual-motor all-wheel drive version of 4.5 seconds, 3 motor all-wheel drive version is reduced to 2.9 seconds.

The pickup truck market has been popular for years. Public information shows that in 2020, the average family size of 2.6 people in the US. So the pickup trucks can fulfill different needs such as riding hauling and other needs. During the pandemic, we also observed that pickup trucks occupy half of the top ten models sold in the auto market in 2019. Entering the pickup truck market will have a significant influence on Tesla, especially in the trend of environmentally friendly electric cars.

However, Tesla is not the only one in the electronic pickup truck market.

At the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, one of Tesla’s biggest competitors, Rivian launched the tall-electric product pickup truck R1T, and that instantly went viral. Since 2018, Rivian has closed astronomical financing totaling more than $10.5 billion. In addition, Rivian made a partnership with Amazon where Amazon became the largest shareholder. With a 20% stake. According to Amazon, Within the next decade, Amazon and Rivian plan to deploy 100,000 custom electric delivery vehicles across more than 100 cities. The market also has other car companies releasing electric pickup truck plans. In addition to Cybertruck and R1T, there are Ford’s F-150 EV, GM GMC Hummer EV, and so on. So we may expect the competition for the electric pickup truck will be fierce.

Most of the electronic pickup cars have become postponed to 2022-2023. Elon recently confirmed Cybertruck would go into production in mid-2023. On an investor call, Musk revealed the updated Cybertruck production schedule. Moreover, that delays in mass production of the new 4680 battery have hampered the recent production timelines. Whether Tesla can take advantage of Cybertruck to stand out in the electric pickup truck market is unknown.
