Wendy’s is a popular fast food chain in America that differentiates itself from its competitors with unique menu items such as its square hamburger and catchy combo meals. Despite this, the company is facing several challenges jeopardizing its future. Coming out of the pandemic, Wendy’s initially saw an increase in revenue.
With dine-in options becoming available again, this trend was seen across many large fast food franchises. However, with the pandemic ending over a year ago, Wendy’s has seen little growth in total revenue since then. Wendy’s has become stagnant in the fast food industry due to a lack of customer loyalty, menu innovation, and global influence.
Wendy’s showed resilience through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. They used digital incentives, delivery, and different marketing initiatives to keep their customer base even without dine in options being available. Coming out of the pandemic they saw huge jumps in revenues.
In the second quarter of 2021, Wendy’s reported revenues of $493.3 million, a 22.7% increase compared to the second quarter of 2020. This can be attributed to the reopening of the dining room experience and the refurbishment of their breakfast menu. However, with the pandemic ending over a year ago, the company has seen little to no gain in revenue.
What makes Wendy’s successful? Challenges and Opportunities for Wendy’s in the Fast Food Industry
A primary challenge that Wendy’s faces is customer loyalty. A lack of customer focus makes customers feel less connected with the restaurant, resulting in consumers turning to other options such as McDonalds or Burger King. Unlike their competitors, Wendy’s does not offer complimentary straws, napkins, or utensils. This creates a feeling of distance within the customer due to the reduction in overall interaction with the brand. With many fast food restaurants, customers are now allowed to get their own drinks, which makes them feel more involved in the process and increases their interaction with the brand.
In order to address this issue, Wendy’s needs to focus on increasing the amount of interaction and engagement with their customers. This can be done by openly offering basic utensils like napkins, cups, and other items similar to other fast food franchises. Along with this, Wendy’s can introduce a drink acquisitions strategy similar to Panera.
Panera has a program called the “Unlimited Sip Club” which allows customers to get unlimited coffees, teas, and fountain drinks for a monthly subscription, in turn making customers feel more involved and connected with the brand. By implementing these ideas into their restaurants, Wendy’s can create a more memorable and satisfying experience for their customers.
Another major challenge that Wendy’s faces is a lack of menu innovation. Over the years, Wendy’s menu has seen little change. Occasionally, they come out with new and innovative ideas such as the square hamburger or catchy combo meals such as the “4 for $4” but this is not enough. The new generation of consumers are constantly seeking new and exciting dining experiences.
Take McDonalds, for example: they create unique menus depending on the location of the restaurant.
Of course, the menu always contains the essential items such as the Big Mac, nuggets, and fries, but it often always features exclusive items based on cultural preferences in the area. For example, in Singapore they offer a Matcha Ice Cream Cone and in Italy they offer Tomato & Mozzarella Turnovers. These are just a few examples, but this is not a feature that even exists for Wendy’s. The discrepancy is further amplified by Wendy’s lack of influence outside of the U.S.
The third area of failure for Wendy’s is its limited presence in international markets.
Wendy’s currently has nearly 6000 locations, with only about 10% being outside of the U.S. The small number of locations outside of North America limits Wendy’s potential for growth and expansion. With the world becoming more and more globalized, it is imperative that Wendy’s finds ways to expand its reach and tap into new markets in order to remain competitive.
What can Wendy’s do to secure its place as a main competitor in the fast food industry?

The first thing they need to do is introduce new and unique menu items that can excite the newer generation of consumers. Furthermore, they can add healthier options, such as more salads and plant based burgers in order to appeal to the customers who are more conscious about their health and wellness. Along with this, Wendy’s needs to increase its influence in foreign markets. They can form partnerships with local franchises which can then open new locations, along with a new marketing campaign that specifically targets these new markets. Furthermore, they should add specific menu items in these locations similar to what McDonalds does in order to form a loyal customer base in these locations.
A prioritization in technology and digital innovation is also necessary for Wendy’s to remain competitive. Increased investment into digital ordering and delivery can dramatically increase revenue by expanding their reach to customers. Additionally, Wendy’s should utilize their social media influence in order to reach a wider audience, possibly bringing in more customers. Moreover, by using and embracing this technology, Wendy’s can streamline its operations, increase their efficiency, and provide a better customer experience.
In conclusion, Wendy’s has the potential to stay a major competitor in the fast food industry. However, in order to do so, it needs to address its areas of weakness. They need to increase customer loyalty, innovate their menu, and expand their influence on a global scale, while using technology and social media to increase their customer base. By doing so, Wendy’s can stay ahead of the competition and continue to provide consumers with a delicious and satisfying dining experience.
