Mark Humphrey-Jenner, UNSW Associate Professor of Finance commented on the tweet, “Michael Burry suggests that the crisis might be over and the markets will bottom. He has also suggested that there is ‘no true danger here’. 

This was primarily in relation to SVB, but also appears to relate to Credit Suisse. 

The comments primarily flow from government intervention to support the banking system, prevent bank collapses, and ward off bank runs.”


Michael Burry is an American investor and hedge fund manager who gained notoriety for his successful bets against the subprime mortgage market leading up to the 2008 financial crisis. Here’s a brief overview of his history:

Burry was born on June 19, 1971, in San Jose, California.

He grew up in California and earned degrees in economics and pre-med from UCLA. After working as a Stanford Hospital neurology resident, he shifted his focus to investing and eventually founded the hedge fund Scion Capital in 2000.

In the mid-2000s, Burry began to see signs of an impending housing market crash!

And as a result of that prediction, started to bet against the subprime mortgage market by purchasing credit default swaps. His investments initially faced heavy scrutiny and criticism from other investors. However, his predictions ultimately came true. And thus Scion Capital made a killing.

Following his success in the subprime mortgage market, Burry retired from managing Scion Capital and focused on his personal investments. In addition, he has recently invested in a variety of industries, including technology, pharmaceuticals, and water rights.

Burry gained renewed attention in 2021 when he began to publicly express concern about the current state of the stock market and the potential for a market bubble.

Furthermore, an outspoken critic of cryptocurrency and has called for increased regulation in the industry.
