What is an eigen value problem?
Education
Eigenvalues are the solutions to the characteristic equation of a matrix which provides valuable information about the matrix’s attributes. They are an important mathematical concept that becomes used in a wide range of fields. Nonetheless, while eigenvalues have lots of advantages, in some cases, eigenvalues also have some drawbacks.
One of the most prominent disadvantages of eigenvalues is that they can be difficult to compute, especially for large matrices. The computational complexity of computing eigenvalues will increase exponentially with the size of the matrix, and this can make it hard to analyze complex systems. Sometimes it may not be possible to compute eigenvalues precisely or the computation may simply just being time-consuming. This could be a significant drawback when the analysis needs to become done on a very large scale or when the cases are time-sensitive.
Secondly, Eigenvalues could also become limited in capturing the complexity of the system while analyzing.
Sometimes the system’s behavior can become too complex to become described by just a few eigenvalues. Moreover, this could be a significant disadvantage in applications where the requirement for accuracy is pursued. For example, in modeling fluid dynamics.
Moreover, eigenvalues can be sensitive to minor changes in the matrix’s elements. Even minor changes in the matrix can lead to significant changes in the eigenvalues, which can make them unreliable under some circumstances. This could be a problem when small changes in the system can lead to a significant impact. For example, in controlling systems or financial modeling.
Eigenvalues are also hard to analyze in complex systems which have multiple interdependent variables. Eigenvalues are only able to analyze one variable at one time, they cannot take the interactions between those variables into account. When you are trying to analyze or model a system that has multiple variables such as climate prediction, this could be a huge problem.
Last but not least, analyzing non-linear systems could also be a drawback of eigenvalues. The characteristic equation used to compute eigenvalues assumes that the whole system is linear. However, a lot of real-world systems are non-linear, the system’s behavior is not proportional to its inputs. We need the other analyzing tools because the linear assumptions of eigenvalues can not accurately analyze the system`s behavior.
