What happens when soil degradation?
We have to eat 8 oranges to get the same amount of Vitamin A as our grandparents got with one orange!
Yes, that’s right. Let that sink in.
Here is another one – The average mineral content of calcium, magnesium, and iron in cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes and spinach is down by 80%.
When soil degrades, the processes occurring within become damaged. As a result, this causes a decline in soil health, biodiversity and productivity. Leading to issues at all levels of many ecosystems. And resulting in large environmental consequences such as floods and mass migration.
The organic content in soil has been depleting at an alarming rate.
If nothing concrete occurs, in the next 20 years, 62% of India’s soil will turn into Sand!
The impact of this is going to be catastrophic.
What can we immediately do about it? Not much.
However, the problem related to soil organic matter is not new.
Organic matter tends to be higher in temperate regions like Canada, Russia, European countries, etc. In tropical , semi arid and arid regions, most organic matter gets oxidised resulting in low organic carbon content.
Added to this, we have social problems in India. Like free-for-all grazing by the cattle after the crops are harvested.
So there is no vegetation in the agricultural lands as animals like goats can eat even the roots of the grasses. So it is difficult to build up the organic matter content in Agricultural soils in a country where temperatures go up to 40 degrees or more Celsius.
