What does Z mean on Russian vehicles?

The Latin-script letter Z (Russian: зет) is one of several symbols painted on military vehicles of the Russian Armed Forces. These symbols were first noticed prior to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. When the military was staging at the border of Ukraine. Moreover, many military analysts speculate the markings are there to help task forces distinguish themselves from other allied or enemy forces.

Russian Oligarchs Flee Moscow

The irony of the Russian “Z” symbol on all their vehicles….and the surrounding celebration of the symbol by pro-Putin people in Russia (and a few other idiots) is this:  Russians put the symbols on their vehicles so that they can identify their own forces both from the ground and from the sky in order to avoid fratricide (killing their own troops). They are publicly celebrating the ineptitude and lack of technological capabilities of their own military.

In conclusion, the US military has cutting edge “blue force tracker” technology that is built into all our systems. As a result we can identify our own vehicles and forces……. Lastly, the last time we had to physically mark them was in 1991, the Gulf War…….30 years ago.
