Walt Garrison Obituary
Today, the world pays tribute to the late Walt Garrison, the quintessential cowboy.
Oklahoma State, where he studied, confirmed his passing at the age of 79.
More than just a title, being a cowboy was a way of life for Garrison. While his heart truly belonged to the rodeo, he was also a revered player for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.
Upon sealing his deal with the Cowboys post his tenure at Oklahoma State, Garrison had a unique request – a trailer fit for two horses. This particular ask reportedly took Cowboys General Manager Tex Schramm by surprise. Yet, Garrison not only secured his trailer but also got the nod to partake in professional rodeo events.
However, Tom Landry, who helmed the Cowboys, did set some ground rules. He ensured Garrison abstained from rodeos the night preceding a game, but apart from that, Garrison frequented the rodeo circuit, especially during the off-season.
Among the standout moments in Garrison’s illustrious rodeo career was his fifth-place finish in steer wrestling at the 1974 Cheyenne Frontier Days. This achievement marked the end of his stint with the Cowboys.
But Garrison was more than just a cowboy and football player; he was a dedicated philanthropist. His commendable efforts in raising substantial funds for multiple sclerosis via the Walt Garrison All-Star Rodeos stand testament to his commitment to give back.
Blessed with a captivating wit, Garrison was known for his storytelling prowess. In many respects, he mirrored the charm and humor of the legendary Will Rogers, albeit in a compact package.
