Six heroes from the USS North Dakota (BB-29), who prevented the loss of their ship from fire on 8 September 1910. The six were honored by then President Taft at the White House on 12 June 1911. From left to right are: Chief Watertender August Holtz (St Louis, MO), Chief Machinists mate Thomas Stanton (Rhode Island), Watertender Harry Lipscomb (Washington DC), Chief Watertender Patrick Reid (New York), Chief Machinists mate Karl Westa (Massachusetts), Machinists mate Charles C. Roberts (Newton, MA).
