Trevor Mottl is Head of AI Quant and Portfolio Manager at Magnetar Capital, where he leads the development and application of artificial intelligence and quantitative investment strategies across the firm’s investment platform. With more than two decades of experience spanning quantitative finance, portfolio management, derivatives, and systematic investing, Trevor has been at the forefront of integrating advanced technology and data-driven approaches into global investment management.
Prior to joining Magnetar, Trevor was a Portfolio Manager at Walleye Capital, where he focused on artificial intelligence and quantitative finance. He previously served as Managing Director and Artificial Intelligence Portfolio Manager at Lazard Asset Management, where he pioneered the use of AI-driven approaches in investment research and portfolio construction.
Earlier in his career, Trevor held senior investment roles at leading global hedge funds and financial institutions, including Head of Long/Short Equity Risk at Balyasny Asset Management, Portfolio Manager at Man GLG, Head of Macro and Derivatives Strategy at Susquehanna International Group, Vice President at Goldman Sachs, Director at Merrill Lynch, and Trader at Credit Suisse First Boston.
Beyond investing, Trevor is deeply involved in advancing the next generation of AI and quantitative finance talent. He serves as a Lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, where he teaches and shares insights on artificial intelligence, finance, and emerging technologies. He is also a Venture Partner at Fusion Fund, supporting innovation at the intersection of technology, entrepreneurship, and financial markets.
Trevor earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Brown University. His unique background combining scientific training, quantitative research, and institutional investing has positioned him as a leading voice in the evolution of AI-powered investing and the future of quantitative finance.
