Towson University Students Told to Shelter in Place After Shooting Near Campus
Students at Towson University in Maryland were ordered to shelter in place Sunday evening as police responded to a shooting reported near the university campus.
The Baltimore County Police Department said officers were at the scene of a shooting in the 8000 block of York Road. Police said a male victim had been transported to a local hospital, but authorities had not released information about his condition.
“Currently on the scene of a shooting in the 8000 block of York Rd.,” the department said in a statement posted on X. Police urged people to stay away from the area while officers worked to secure the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained unclear Sunday night. Police had not said whether additional people were injured or identified the victim. It was also not immediately known whether the person who was shot was affiliated with Towson University.
The university issued an emergency alert to students and others on campus at approximately 7 p.m., directing everyone to remain indoors.
“EVERYONE ON THE TOWSON UNIVERSITY CAMPUS SHOULD SHELTER IN PLACE IMMEDIATELY,” the alert stated, emphasizing that the warning was not a drill. Students were instructed to close their windows and doors, report anything unusual to police and wait for further instructions from local authorities.
The reported shooting occurred in the 8000 block of York Road, an area immediately adjacent to the Towson University community.
Local reporting indicated that police were investigating a shooting at the Cardiff Hall East Apartments, a residential complex in the area that houses university students.
The shelter-in-place order underscored the uncertainty surrounding the incident as police worked to determine what had happened and whether there was any continuing threat to people in the surrounding area.
Authorities had not publicly announced an arrest or identified a suspect as of Sunday evening.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected as Baltimore County police determine the circumstances of the shooting and release further details.
