The Suicide Squad Review

The Suicide Squad Review Director James Gunn has made one of the greatest DC movies ever to grace the screen in 2021’s The Suicide Squad!
Despite being the sequel to the much maligned film Suicide Squad, Director Gunn has managed to resurrect both DC and the Suicide series by producing a stellar film in The Suicide Squad now streaming on HBO+ and in theaters.

Replacing a terribly cast Will Smith was Idris Elba as the new leader of the Squad; the Academy award winning actor who stole our hearts as one of the gang leaders in HBO’s The Wire puts in a perfect performance for the role. Elba brings character, personality, and believability to a performance that Will Smith lacked in the first film.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Tie Ins
Director Gunn also ties in his popular Guardians of the Galaxy series by making Starlord’s adopted father Yondu Udonta’s actor, Michael Rooker, play a character that does a superb job of introducing the audience to the feel of this new film. Michael Rooker has been playing likeable villains since the beginning of Kevin Smith’s directing career in the 90s with MallRats.

Harley Quinn played by the always likeable Margot Robbie brings her usual bit of sting and sizzle to the movie. Robbie’s character was one of the few standout positive features of the first film, along with the character Robbie is fond of, DC Comics’ legendary Captain Rick Flag who first appeared in a 1951 comic edition.

Keeping What Worked
Flag brings his same bit of short-tempered manner from the first film to a cheeky Gunn production that blends perfectly with the new theme. The new theme is similar to the Guardians Of the Galaxy, likeable do-gooders who are quite odd and misunderstood.

On the negative side, some scenes felt ripped off from Guardians, but maybe that has just become Gunn’s signature, classic rock playing in the background as our heroes murder their way through the movie for a fun 45-second montage. Sylvester Stallone’s character also seems like a knockoff of Vin Diesel’s Groot from Guardians.
The plot is highly simplistic, but that is not of serious relevance to a great James Gunn film, as you watch this to be entertained and to enjoy spending time with misfit superheroes. Besides, when DC has tried to develop much of a plot in their past movies, the failures, such as Justice League, have been complete messes of a movie.
So bravo to Gunn for doing what most DC directors cannot, and that is making a good film.
