Tesla’s European Sales Drop 40% in July as Rivals Gain Ground

Auto, Aviation & Transportation News

Tesla’s grip on the European electric vehicle market weakened further in July 2025, as new registrations tumbled 40 percent from a year earlier. According to industry data, the company recorded just 8,837 registrations compared with nearly 14,800 in July 2024. The decline marked Tesla’s seventh straight month of contraction, reducing its regional market share to 0.8 percent—down from 1.4 percent a year ago.

What makes this slide particularly striking is that it occurred during a surge in Europe’s broader EV sector. Battery-electric vehicle sales across the continent climbed more than 30 percent year-on-year, while plug-in hybrids and hybrids helped push overall electrified vehicles to almost 60 percent of all new car sales. Far from shrinking, the European EV market appears to be accelerating.

Chinese automaker BYD has emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries of this momentum. The company more than tripled its sales in July, grabbing 1.2 percent of the market and overtaking Tesla in the region for the month. BYD’s diverse lineup of affordable EVs and plug-in hybrids appears to resonate with buyers navigating both tighter emissions regulations and economic uncertainty.

For Tesla, the numbers raise difficult questions. Is the slump a reflection of company-specific headwinds—such as pricing strategy, consumer perception, or heightened competition—or does it point to a structural shift as Europe’s EV ecosystem becomes more crowded and competitive?

The coming months may provide clarity, but one fact is clear: Tesla’s once commanding lead in Europe is no longer guaranteed.
