Sergeant William “Jerome” Rivers (1976 – 2024)

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Sergeant William Rivers, known to his friends and family as Jerome, at the age of 46. Furthermore, dedicated serviceman, Sgt. Rivers became tragically killed in a drone attack on a U.S. outpost in Jordan last month.

Born in 1976, Sgt. Rivers embarked on his military journey with the Army Reserve in New Jersey in 2011. His commitment to service was exemplified during a nine-month tour in Iraq in 2018 as part of Operation Inherent Resolve. He was a valued member of the 718th Engineer Company, 926th Engineer Battalion, 926th Engineer Brigade, based in Fort Moore, Georgia.

The funeral service for Sgt. Rivers, held on Tuesday morning at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Carrollton. General Todd Lazaroski, in his eulogy, described Sgt. Rivers as more than a soldier – a friend, a confidant, and a source of positivity and wisdom. “Staff Sergeant Rivers embodied the true essence of leadership and friendship. His memory will forever remain a beacon of love, kindness, and professionalism,” General Lazaroski remarked.

Sgt. Rivers remembered for his infectious smile, strength, compassion, and unwavering faith. These qualities endeared him to all who knew him and will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.

Following the service, a solemn procession made its way to Canton for a private burial. The community showed their respects by lining the procession route along Hwy. 166 bypass and Bankhead Highway.

Sgt. Rivers’s military career became marked by his role as an Interior Electrician (12R), receiving multiple awards and decorations for his service. He initially served with the 990th Engineer Company at Fort McGuire-Dix in New Jersey, demonstrating his dedication and skill.

In response to the attack that claimed his life, the U.S. has conducted several strikes targeting militant groups in Syria and Iraq, a testament to the ongoing commitment to combat threats and honor the sacrifices of soldiers like Sgt. Rivers.

As we mourn the loss of Sgt. William Rivers, we celebrate his life and legacy, a true hero who risked everything for his country. His memory will be eternally cherished by his family, friends, and fellow soldiers.
