Sagard and HalseyPoint Asset Management Forge New Strategic Path
Los Angeles, California – In a landmark financial move, Sagard, a prominent global multi-strategy alternative asset manager owned by the powerful Canadian Desmarais family, and HalseyPoint, a leading U.S.-based CLO (Collateralized Loan Obligation) manager, announced their entry into a strategic partnership.
Under the terms of the agreement, Sagard, which manages over $25 billion in assets, has acquired a substantial 40% stake in HalseyPoint’s CLO platform. This move is aimed at propelling HalseyPoint into its next growth phase, an ambition that will now be supported by Sagard’s substantial resources and network. The partnership also entails a co-branding of the platform as Sagard | HalseyPoint.
The co-founders and managing partners of HalseyPoint, Yvonne Stevens and Lynn Hopton, along with Sagard, will each maintain equal equity ownership stakes in HalseyPoint. Additionally, A-CAP, a privately-held insurance and financial services business and the original equity investor in HalseyPoint, will continue to hold a minority stake.
The founders of HalseyPoint have expressed their enthusiasm about the partnership. “Partnering with Sagard, given their impressive investor base and extensive network, is a pivotal step for us as we embark on a new phase of growth,” stated Hopton and Stevens. They see Sagard’s strong credit franchise as the perfect fit for expanding HalseyPoint into a premier CLO manager.
HalseyPoint, since its inception in July 2019, has been a formidable player in the issuance and management of CLOs. The company has launched seven CLOs, totaling over $3.2 billion, focusing on the U.S. leveraged loan and high-yield bond asset class. Prior to HalseyPoint, Stevens and Hopton led the CLO effort at Columbia Management for 18 years, where they raised over $12 billion in assets under management across 22 CLO structures.
Adam Vigna, Managing Partner and CIO at Sagard, praised the track record of HalseyPoint’s team. He highlighted the partnership’s goal to become a leader in CLO investment strategy by merging HalseyPoint’s expertise with Sagard’s distribution capabilities and access to CLO equity capital. “This partnership not only expands our credit offering but also provides our investing partners a new avenue for investing in U.S. corporate credit,” Vigna stated.
Reflecting this significant collaboration, HalseyPoint will soon adopt the co-branded identity of Sagard | HalseyPoint.
