“Roger Weiss was a pioneer and a philanthropist who cherished the transformative experience Cornell offered him and later generations of student-athletes, coaches, and staff who benefited from his support,” stated Dr. Nicki Moore, the Meakem & Smith Director of Athletics & Physical Education. “His unmatched passion and pride for Big Red football lasted his entire life. Roger’s love for both Cornell and its football team was immense, and both will profoundly miss him.”

In 1982, Weiss made history as the first individual to endow a head coach’s position in college football. His dedication to Cornell was further demonstrated in 1991 when he financed a cable deal between the Ivy League and Sports-Channel America after ESPN did not renew Ivy football. Weiss ensured the broadcasting rights were secured solely for Cornell’s seven Ivy League games. Additionally, his name graces the press box lounge overlooking Schoellkopf Field, recognizing his significant contributions.

For over thirty years, Weiss was a prominent figure on the Big Red sidelines, celebrating Cornell football’s Ivy League Championships in 1988 and 1990. His unwavering support extended beyond football, impacting various facets of the athletics program.

“Roger Weiss was more than just a supporter of Cornell Football; he was an institution,” said Dan Swanstrom, the Roger J. Weiss ’61 Head Coach of Cornell Football. “Since my appointment as head coach in December, Roger and I developed a meaningful friendship through our weekly conversations. His passion for the program and steadfast support were truly inspiring. Roger’s passing is a significant loss for all of us, and he will be deeply missed.”

Beyond athletics, Weiss served on the Cornell University Board of Trustees from 1988 to 2000. And later honored as an Emeritus Trustee and Presidential Councilor, the highest accolade the university can bestow upon an alumnus. In 2012, inducted into the Cornell Athletics Hall of Fame.

As a Board member and generous benefactor, Weiss was a powerful advocate for the Department of Athletics & Physical Education. Over the years, he also mentored many former Big Red athletes as they progressed in their careers, with some starting their professional journeys at the investment firm of Weiss Peck & Greer.

In conclusion, Roger survived by his wife of 53 years. Caren. In addition, his son Gregory. Additionally, daughter-in-law Rachel, and their children Jack and Alexis. Furthermore, stepdaughter Robin Benerofe, her husband Steve; stepdaughter Wendy Gordon, her husband Keith, and their children Nicholas, Carey, and Jacob.
