PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The community of Pickerington is mourning the loss of Rodney Culver Jr., a former basketball player who left a lasting impact both on and off the court.
Rodney Culver Jr. passed away on July 14. He graduated from Pickerington Central High School in 2015, where he was celebrated for his remarkable performances on the basketball court and his contribution to the 2012 state championship team.
One of his longtime mentors, Coach George Howard, is deeply affected by his passing.
“I think about him every day,” Coach Howard shared.
The Pickerington community honored Culver on social media, with posts stating, “Tiger Basketball lost a great one” and “A tremendous player. A better person.” These sentiments reflect the profound impact Culver had on those around him.
“Rodney was someone who genuinely cared about people, loved everyone, and always wanted to enjoy life. And that’s exactly what he did,” Coach Howard said.
Culver’s influence extended beyond his personality. His basketball prowess led him to play for Ohio University, where he continued to demonstrate his relentless dedication and passion for the game.
“Rodney’s aggressiveness and commitment on the court were unmatched. He never took plays off and always gave his best. As a coach who values hard work, Rodney was one of those players who always impressed me,” Howard remarked.
Coach Howard was present at the hospital when Culver passed away, understanding that this loss resonates deeply within the community.
“It’s a tough situation for everyone, not just his family but also his friends and the entire community. Rodney had many great friends who are also feeling this loss,” he said.
A vigil to honor Rodney Culver Jr. will be held at Victory Park in Pickerington at 8 p.m. on Monday, where the community will gather to remember the young athlete and his legacy.
