Obituary: Peter Higgs (1929-2024)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Higgs, the esteemed Nobel Prize-winning physicist renowned for proposing the existence of the Higgs boson, often referred to as the ‘God particle.’ Higgs passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, April 8, 2024, at the age of 94, following a short illness, as confirmed by the University of Edinburgh.

Born in Newcastle, England, on May 29, 1929, Higgs was a visionary in the world of physics. His groundbreaking work in 1964, which proposed the existence of a new sub-atomic particle, later known as the Higgs boson, revolutionized our understanding of how elemental particles achieve mass. This monumental discovery was a cornerstone of the Standard Model of particle physics and provided profound insights into the formation of matter following the Big Bang.

Higgs’ prediction remained a theoretical proposition for nearly five decades!

Until the historic confirmation of the Higgs boson in 2012 at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, a moment that marked a major breakthrough in physics. For his contributions, Higgs became honored with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013. Sharing the accolade with Francois Englert of Belgium.

Peter Higgs spent a significant part of his career at the University of Edinburgh, contributing immensely to the field of theoretical physics and inspiring countless scientists. His work not only solved one of the most fundamental mysteries of the universe but also spurred generations of physicists to explore the very fabric of reality. The confirmation of his theory at the Large Hadron Collider stood as a testament to human ingenuity and the quest for understanding the cosmos.

In addition to his scientific achievements, Higgs became awarded honorary degrees from numerous esteemed institutions. And appointed a Companion of Honor by Queen Elizabeth II in 2013. He leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond his seminal work in physics, impacting the very way we comprehend our universe. Higgs’ passing is a great loss to the scientific community and to the world, but his contributions will continue to inspire and guide future generations of physicists and thinkers.
