Online Dating Is Changing Society Online dating services have forever changed how we search for love. Your next relationship could literally be only a swipe away. Apps enable you to connect with people you would never meet otherwise, extending the frontiers of our social networks
From Tinder to OkCupid and Bumble, some of the most popular apps have altered the way match-making works. We can now meet our next fling or a potential marriage partner by simply swiping them right. All you need are a few photos and a sentence of description, and you can decide whether or not you’d be a good match. It has its positives and negatives. Some people might complain that dating has become more superficial now that it’s so convenient to meet someone new. However, most online daters are increasingly enthusiastic about the opportunities.
It’s not only our romantic relationships that are changing thanks to online dating services.
The very nature of how our society works is also changing, as the apps bring together people they would never meet in their day-to-day lives.
Josue Ortega of the University of Essex in the U.K. and Philipp Hergovich of the University of Vienna in Austria published research The Strength of Absent Ties: Social Integration via Online Dating . According to Ortega and Hergovich, “We would probably not marry our best friends, but we are likely to end up marrying a friend of a friend or someone we coincided with in the past.” Furthermore, the researchers expect “nearly complete racial integration” from online dating.

Ortega and Hergovich write that the trend “suggests that the diversity of societies, measured by the number of interracial marriages in it, should increase drastically after the introduction of online dating,” “Societies where online dating is available should produce marriages that are less likely to break up.”
Online dating has broken long-standing physical barriers and opened the door for new communities to connect. Here’s a closer look at these exciting processes:
Here’s How Dating Has Changed
Before dating apps became widespread, people met their romantic partners primarily through mutual friends. You usually wouldn’t date anyone from your innermost social circle, but find someone one step out of it. Where would you meet them? Your family or friends were very likely to introduce them to you, or you’d find romance at the places you visit: a cinema, church, class, gym, etc. As a result, all your dates were always somehow connected to the people and locations in your life, so your partners were bound to be pretty similar to you.
It has all changed with online match-making. The vast majority of those you meet on the internet are likely to be far outside of your typical social circle. Most of the time, the matches are strangers.
The Most Popular Apps
Tinder is arguably the number one dating app single people use for everything from casual hookups to finding true love. You swipe people’s photos to the left if you don’t like them and to the right if you do like them. And there’s a match every time you both swipe right. Sounds too simple? Here are some other popular service providers that make the match-making process a bit more interesting:

• Bumble also works via swiping. However, only women can text first.
• OkCupid gives you a ton of questions to answer so that you could match with people whose personal interests and views go together with yours.
• Hinge has no swiping feature. You can start your online dating chat by leaving a comment on someone’s profile information or liking a pic.
The Problem with Dating Apps
Although dating apps make finding love easy, they also enable people to cut ties with others. It’s called “ghosting,” and everyone who looks for love from the internet has probably experienced it. Even the slightest loss of interest can cause the other side to “unmatch” you and continue swiping. What are the consequences of that? Since the apps make it seem like there’s always someone better to swipe away, your criteria for choosing a partner tends to become increasingly superficial.
How to Get the Most Out of Dating Apps
Dating apps can work great in finding your perfect match. However, it’s vital to approach them with the right mindset. If you only swipe without paying much attention to it, you’ll most likely experience non-satisfactory results. Instead, you can avoid online dating burnout by writing a great bio, uploading well-lit photos, and starting conversations in a personalized way (commenting on your match’s photos, for example). Your attention to detail will lead to much more meaningful connections.
Communities Connect Thanks to Online Dating
Here’s a fact: ever since the introduction of Tinder in 2014, interracial marriages have spiked. And online dating during the COVID-19 pandemic has only increased that trend. The reason is simple: the applications expose everyone to a wide pool of possible suitors, so even people with pretty specific preferences can get surprised by some of their matches. They might go on a date with someone they would never have considered as a partner, and enjoy it.
And that leads directly to a more diverse and open society with fewer barriers.
Dating apps have changed our society. Matchmaking will never be the same, as endless online dating ideas expose people to other singles from way out of their usual social circle. As a result, there’s much more integration in society. And much more love. What could be better?
