Obituary for Dr. N. Ray Tuck Jr.

The National University of Health Sciences community, along with the broader field of chiropractic medicine, is mourning the loss of an esteemed leader and compassionate healer, Dr. N. Ray Tuck Jr., who passed away recently. A distinguished alumnus of NUHS, class of ’97, Dr. Tuck’s death marks a significant loss in the field he so passionately served.

Dr. Tuck was a prominent figure in chiropractic medicine, not only as the past president of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) but also as the recipient of several prestigious honors, including the 2019 ACA Chiropractor of the Year and NUHS Alumnus of the Year. His passing left a void deeply felt by many.

“Dr. Tuck was not only a distinguished graduate of our institution but also an exemplary individual whose contributions to chiropractic medicine left an indelible mark on society,” remarked NUHS President Joseph Stiefel, MS, EdD, DC. “His accomplishments serve as an inspiration to current and future generations of students.”

Dr. Tuck’s legacy is particularly prominent in Southwest rural Virginia, where he significantly increased access to chiropractic care. Following in his father’s footsteps (NUHS ’78), Dr. Tuck expanded two practices into a network of 11 clinics, earning recognition as one of Virginia’s top 50 rising companies and best places to work.

Innovation was at the core of Dr. Tuck’s approach, evident in his establishment of Tuck WorkWell, which provides on-site primary care, chiropractic, and occupational health services for employers. He transformed the traditional business model for chiropractors into a team-based, integrative approach, recognizing the need for business acumen in providing exceptional care.

Dr. Tuck’s insights extended beyond his business ventures. As the Fall commencement speaker at NUHS in 2022, he imparted the “platinum rule” to students – emphasizing the importance of treating others as they wish to be treated, a testament to his patient-centered approach.

Dr. Tuck held several influential positions, including board member of the Virginia Board of Medicine. In addition, member of the Board of Governors at the American Chiropractic Association. And board member of the Montgomery County, VA Economic Development Department. His contributions to these organizations reflect his commitment to advancing healthcare and chiropractic care.

A Virginia native, Dr. Tuck earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Sciences from Radford University and went on to complete a second Bachelor’s in Human Biology, followed by a Doctorate of Chiropractic from The National College of Chiropractic. His career choice was inspired by witnessing the transformative impact of chiropractic care in his father’s practice.

Dr. Tuck’s dedication to community service was unparalleled. He was involved with the Montgomery Economic Development Authority, Christiansburg Moose Club, Pulaski Elks, Hokie Club, and Blacksburg Sports Club, and contributed significantly to local sports teams.

Throughout his career, Dr. Tuck received numerous accolades. Moreover, including the 1999 Small Business Person of the Year award. And the 2004 VCA Chiropractor of the Year award. His passing is not just the loss of a great chiropractor. But the loss of a community leader, a visionary, and a compassionate healer.

Dr. N. Ray Tuck Jr. will become remembered for his profound contributions to chiropractic medicine. In addition, his dedication to his community. And lastly, his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others. In conclusion, his legacy will continue to inspire and influence for generations to come.
