Molloy University has been awarded the 2026 Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement, one of the most respected national recognitions for colleges and universities committed to civic involvement, service learning, and sustained community partnerships.

The designation places Molloy among a small and selective group of institutions nationwide. On Long Island, Molloy is one of only two colleges to receive the honor and the only private university to do so, reinforcing its long standing reputation as a mission driven institution focused on public service and applied learning.

The Community Engagement Classification, administered by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, follows a demanding national review process. Institutions must demonstrate measurable, reciprocal partnerships with local, regional, and global communities across teaching, research, and service. Molloy’s successful application highlighted extensive collaborations in healthcare, education, social services, nonprofit organizations, and community based initiatives throughout Long Island and the greater New York region.

University President James P Lentini said the recognition reflects Molloy’s core identity. He emphasized that service, compassion, and real world impact remain central to the student experience. According to Lentini, Molloy graduates leave not only career ready but also prepared to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

From a student perspective, Molloy’s community engagement shows up directly in the curriculum. Service learning is embedded across many academic programs. Clinical placements and internships connect students to hospitals, schools, and local agencies. Faculty led research addresses practical community challenges, while long term institutional partnerships ensure that engagement is sustained rather than symbolic.

For prospective students and families evaluating colleges on Long Island, the Carnegie designation offers a clear signal. It indicates that Molloy prioritizes experiential learning, civic responsibility, and outcomes that extend beyond the classroom. For employers and community partners, it confirms the university’s role as an active regional anchor institution.

The Carnegie Community Engagement Classification is awarded every five years and is widely viewed as one of the highest benchmarks for institutional commitment to public service. For Molloy University, the 2026 recognition reinforces both its academic mission and its growing impact across New York.
