Maya El-Timany Obituary

Society News
The Western University community is in a state of sorrow over the loss of Maya El-Timany, a dedicated and bright third-year student at the Media, Information, and Technoculture program.

Maya, originally from Whitby, Ontario, and just 20 years old, sadly passed away on January 21 due to illness. Her vibrant presence at Western University had been a source of joy and inspiration to many.

The Faculty of Information and Media Studies, where Maya was a valued student, expressed their profound sadness. “Her passing is a profound loss for her friends, classmates, and the entire university community,” a heartfelt email from Dean Lisa Henderson, Associate Dean Susan Knabe, and Kathie Hess, the Manager of Undergraduate Student Services, conveyed. They noted Maya’s significant contributions to her classes and extracurricular activities, highlighting the impact she had on those around her.

In their message, Henderson, Knabe, and Hess also extended their support to Maya’s family and urged students affected by this tragic news to seek assistance. They provided contact details for the Faculty’s support services, encouraging anyone in need to reach out.

The email emphasized the importance of community support during such difficult times, reminding students that “losing a young individual, embarking on her journey of life, is a tremendous loss for our community.”

To further extend condolences, students were invited to pen personal messages to Maya’s family. These notes, collected at the Undergraduate Student Services office in the FIMS and Nursing Building, will be forwarded to Maya’s family as a collective expression of sympathy from the Western community.

Remembering Maya, visitation services were held on January 26 and 27 at Barnes Memorial Funeral Home in Whitby, followed by a funeral service on January 27 at the same venue. Maya’s memory will continue to be honored by all who knew her at Western University.
