Marshall Durham Obituary

The Lewisville Independent School District (LISD) community is deeply saddened by the passing of Marshall Durham, a cherished former teacher, principal, and longtime assistant superintendent. Mr. Durham passed away on July 31, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service to education and his community.

Marshall Durham was a proud product of LISD, having been a student and a 1951 graduate of Lewisville High School. As a senior, captain of both the football and basketball teams, served as the Sgt. at Arms of the Student Council. In addition, named “Most Popular Boy” in the 1951 edition of The Farmer yearbook.

After serving in the military and completing his degree at the University of North Texas, Durham returned to LISD in 1957 as a 7th-grade teacher at Central Elementary. In 1968, he became the principal of LISD’s first dedicated middle school. Furthermore, by 1972, he had accepted the role of assistant superintendent, a position he held until his retirement in 2001.

Moreover, during his time with LISD, Durham witnessed the district’s remarkable growth. From a single school building to becoming one of the largest districts in Texas. Thus, culminating with the opening of Hebron and Flower Mound High Schools in 1999.

Marshall Durham’s contributions to LISD immortalized through Marshall Durham Middle School. Thus, a testament to his lasting impact on the community. His influence extends beyond the school named in his honor, reaching thousands of students and colleagues whose lives he touched as an educator and leader.

Superintendent Dr. Lori Rapp reflected on his legacy, stating, “Mr. Durham’s legacy lives on in the hearts and halls of everyone in the Lewisville and LISD communities. There’s no doubt that his impact will be felt in our district for many decades to come through the lives and contributions of those he educated, and his children and grandchildren that have continued the Durham family tradition of service to our schools and community.”

In conclusion, Marshall Durham’s enduring commitment to education and community service has left an indelible mark on LISD and the lives of countless individuals. Additionally, he will become deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
