Obituary: In Loving Memory of Stuart O’Connell and Mark Eager

It is with deep sadness that we announce the tragic passing of Stuart O’Connell and Mark Eager, who lost their lives in a motorcycle accident on the R195 road at Bellaney, between Oldcastle and Castlepollard, Co Meath, on Sunday, July 28, 2024.

The accident occurred around 4:40 p.m., involving three vehicles. Both Stuart and Mark, pronounced dead at the scene. Their sudden departure has left a profound void in the hearts of their families, friends, and the local community.

Moreover, Stuart and Mark became well-known and cherished members of the community. Local Sinn Féin TD Jonny Guirke expressed the collective grief, saying, “I knew the lads well, two lovely lads. It happened about a mile from my own house – I looked out the window and saw the lights flashing by, and I knew something was wrong. It was only later that I found out who they were.” Their loss has become deeply felt by all who knew them.

This tragic incident is part of a dark weekend on Irish roads, with five lives lost since Saturday. These include a young man in his 20s in Navan and another individual near Kinsale, as well as a 14-year-old following an e-scooter accident in Kilkenny.

Taoiseach Simon Harris expressed his deep sorrow over these tragedies, stating, “113 people have now lost their lives on Irish roads this year – an increase of 16 compared to the same period last year. These are not statistics; they are lost lives and shattered families.”

Garda Superintendent Liam Geraghty emphasized the reality and preventability of road deaths, urging all drivers to slow down and never drive under the influence of intoxicants. He highlighted the vulnerability of motorcyclists, stating, “Motorcyclists are a vulnerable road user. If they are involved in a collision with a car or another vehicle, they are likely to sustain serious or fatal injuries.”
