Marilyn was born in Freeport, Bahamas, and joined Northeastern as an assistant professor in mechanical and industrial engineering in 2010. Over the next decade, she rose to the rank of professor, eventually serving as chair for graduate studies and research. Her leadership extended to her work as the head of a university lab—aptly named the MINUS lab, a reflection of her contributions to her field and the Northeastern community.

“Marilyn loved Northeastern and gave her heart and soul to this place,” said Andrew Gouldstone, associate chair for undergraduate affairs in mechanical and industrial engineering. Marilyn’s profound love for the university was evident in everything she did, from her teaching to her mentorship, her research, and her tireless efforts on behalf of the community she cared for so deeply.

Joseph E. Aoun, president of Northeastern, praised Marilyn’s legacy: “She was an amazing and accomplished teacher, scholar, and mentor to many in the Northeastern community. Her outstanding character and empathy left a deep impression on all who knew her. We will cherish her legacy.”

Marilyn was recognized for her remarkable dedication, receiving the Dean’s Award for Meritorious Service in January. Gregory Abowd, dean of Northeastern’s College of Engineering, reflected on her impact, stating, “She was a compassionate and empathetic leader who could make difficult decisions with grace.”

Marilyn Minus’ work at Northeastern was part of a National Science Foundation initiative to develop women faculty in STEM. Her legacy will live on in the countless lives she touched, both personally and professionally, at Northeastern and beyond.
