Avon High School Soccer Player in Critical Condition After Hit-and-Run Incident

Avon, CT – Liam Shields, a sophomore and soccer player at Avon High School, is fighting for his life after a tragic hit-and-run incident on the night of Friday, October 4. According to a GoFundMe campaign set up to support his recovery, Liam remains in critical condition following the accident. As of press time, the campaign had raised over $48,000 to help cover medical expenses, with friends and family expressing their hope for his recovery.

Avon police responded to a call at Arch Road and Security Drive at around 9:15 p.m. after a passerby reported a disturbing scene: a damaged bicycle, loose candy, and a cell phone were found lying in the street. A short distance away, officers discovered Liam in critical condition, lying on the roadside. He was quickly transported to Hartford Hospital, where he remains in intensive care.

Police say an initial investigation revealed that 33-year-old Alex Joel Rivera struck Liam near 11 Arch Road. Shockingly, Rivera reportedly carried the injured teen on the roof of his red Subaru Forester for nearly four miles before Liam was left on the side of the road.

Two Good Samaritans, noticing Rivera’s erratic driving, became suspicious and later returned to find Liam severely injured, prompting them to alert authorities.

The Avon Police Department is continuing its investigation into the incident, and the community has rallied around Liam’s family, offering support through the fundraising campaign as they wait and hope for positive news in his recovery.
