Four-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 5 in Marion County Claims Multiple Injuries

MARION COUNTY, Ore. — August 22, 2024 — On Thursday, August 22, 2024, at approximately 5:26 a.m., Oregon State Police were dispatched to the scene of a serious four-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 near milepost 277 in Marion County.

Preliminary reports suggest that a black Volkswagen Golf, driven by 35-year-old Christopher Lee Connely of Cascade Locks, was traveling northbound on I-5 when it rear-ended a maroon Dodge Ram, operated by Robert Allen Morton, 59, of Salem. The impact occurred at highway speeds, causing the Dodge to lose control and spin across multiple lanes of traffic.

Behind them, a silver Nissan Altima, driven by Julia Cesar Garcia, 30, of Albany, was unable to avoid the collision and struck the out-of-control Dodge. The Dodge and the Volkswagen then veered across the cable barrier and entered the southbound lanes of I-5, where they collided with a silver Ford Ranger driven by 31-year-old Kenneth Lee Whelchel of Dallas. The impact forced the Ranger off the road, where it ultimately crashed into a barrier and came to a stop approximately a quarter mile down the highway.
