Joe Coates, the director of Charleston County‘s emergency management department, has passed away after a battle with cancer.

Charleston County officials announced that Coates died peacefully with his family by his side.

“Today, we are deeply saddened by the loss of Joe Coates, an outstanding Emergency Management Director and a cherished friend. Joe’s leadership and unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of our community were unparalleled. His absence will be profoundly felt by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” stated Charleston County Council Chairman Herb Sass in a statement released on Friday.

Joe Coates was appointed the director of Charleston County Emergency Management in January 2022, having served as interim director since July 2021. He joined the county in 2008.

“Joe’s impact on Charleston County, both as an organization and as a community, cannot be overstated. I had the honor of working alongside him during both crises and calm times and witnessed firsthand how his steady leadership and expertise shaped our Emergency Management program into one of the nation’s best. Joe’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched positively, and he will be greatly missed,” said Charleston County Administrator Bill Tuten.

Earlier this month, Charleston County renamed its Emergency Operations Center in honor of Coates. The announcement was made on May 16, naming it the Joe Coates Emergency Operations Center, in a ceremony attended by his family, friends, and colleagues.

“Thank you all very much. This is a very surprising and touching honor, but I must acknowledge my team,” Coates said upon receiving the honor. “Without the incredible team we have, none of our achievements would have been possible. We are on the right path.”

Moreover, under his leadership, the emergency management department achieved full accreditation, signifying its national qualifications and preparedness for emergency situations.

Laslty, Deputy Director Ben Webster has been appointed as the interim director.
