In recent developments, French officials have confirmed to Russia that the Islamic State group was the perpetrator of the recent horrific terror strike in Moscow, contradicting Russia’s insinuations of Ukrainian involvement.

Moreover, the incident, which is the most severe terrorist attack in Russia in the last 20 years, occurred at the Crocus City Hall during a performance by Picnic, a band from the Soviet era. This attack resulted in 137 fatalities and over 180 injuries.

French President Emmanuel Macron, aligning with the United States’ stance, has acknowledged the Islamic State’s claim of responsibility, specifically linking it to the ISIS-Khorasan faction. In stark contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin has avoided attributing the attack to the Islamic State, instead suggesting a connection to Ukraine. However, Ukraine has firmly denied any involvement.

French authorities have raised their national terror alert to the highest level in response to the Moscow attack. Meanwhile, the Russian government’s approach and statements have drawn criticism from various international leaders, including President Macron, who has offered French assistance in apprehending those responsible. This tense geopolitical situation follows Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which has been a significant point of contention internationally, with the U.S. and European allies providing extensive support to Ukraine.
