Incheon National University Researchers Propose a Web 3.0 Streaming Architecture and Marketplace Is Web3 a blockchain?
Cryptocurrency & Blockchain News
In a groundbreaking development, researchers from Incheon National University have introduced “Retriever,” a novel Web 3.0 streaming architecture and marketplace that promises to significantly enhance the efficiency and user experience of real-time Web 3.0 services. This innovative platform, leveraging the principles of Web 3.0, is set to revolutionize the way we interact with streaming media by providing a transparent, fair, and decentralized marketplace.
Web 3.0 represents a shift towards a blockchain-based internet, offering transparency and decentralization over traditional models. However, adapting Web 3.0 to streaming services has been challenging due to technical issues such as decreased user experience and incompatibility with some operating systems and browsers.
Moreover, recognizing these hurdles, the research team at Incheon National University, led by Assistant Professor Gi Seok Park, embarked on a project to redesign the service architecture for Web 3.0 media streaming.
Their research, published in the IEEE Transactions on Services Computing in November-December 2023, introduces a unique end-to-end system architecture tailored for Web 3.0 streaming. Utilizing the Inter-Planetary File System (IPFS), a peer-to-peer (P2P) data storage technology integral to Web 3.0, the researchers aimed to minimize service delays and enhance user experience.
A critical aspect of their architecture involved deploying their own IPFS nodes and controlling the blockchain, thus overcoming the limitations posed by third-party IPFS pinning services. This approach enabled effective content caching and scheduling on their IPFS nodes, fostering collaboration among nodes for rapid data downloading. As a result, the system remained compatible with IPFS nodes and operated efficiently on IPFS P2P networks.
A key innovation of this project is the launch of Retriever, a media non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace developed using Web 3.0 technologies. Retriever offers a platform for users to view video content, ensuring data privacy and compatibility with various mobile devices. Dr. Park highlights the potential of Retriever in empowering content creators to monetize and even sell their video content as NFTs, ensuring a transparent and fair process.
In conclusion, Dr. Park emphasized the broader implications of their study. Furthermore, stating, “Our proposed service establishes digital trust among users. Thanks to blockchain technology, future web services won’t need to enforce trust. Thus, as all transactions will be conducted fairly through smart contracts and recorded transparently on the blockchain ledger.” This statement underlines the transformative impact of their research in fostering a more trustworthy, efficient, and user-friendly Web 3.0 streaming landscape.
