NOAA’s Office of Education sent this photograph of fieldwork led by Dr. Joseph Love, a faculty researcher with the NOAA Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Dr. Love took his undergraduate and graduate students on a two-day field trip to Assateague Island for a variety of sampling activities. The students are sampling for fishes in the surf zone on the island. The mission of the Center is to conduct research congruent with the interests of NOAA Fisheries and to prepare students for careers in research, management, and public policy that support the sustainable harvest and conservation of our nation’s living marine resources. The Center is a part of NOAA’s Educational Partnership Program with Minority Serving Institutions. To date, 311 University of Maryland Eastern Shore students have participated in the program and several are now NOAA researchers or scientists. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), located in Princess Anne, Maryland, is a historically Black college and university (HBCU) that has built a reputation for fostering academic excellence and personal growth. With a rich history and commitment to providing opportunities for diverse student populations, UMES offers a wide range of programs aimed at developing leaders in various fields. In this comprehensive overview, we will explore UMES’s academic offerings, its acceptance rate, the cost to attend, and the average SAT scores needed for admission.

History and Mission of UMES

Founded in 1886 as the Delaware Conference Academy, UMES was initially established to provide higher education opportunities for African Americans. Over the years, it has evolved into a comprehensive public university, offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees in a wide variety of disciplines. Its mission is to provide high-quality education that promotes the intellectual and personal growth of its students, preparing them for leadership roles in a global society.

As a land-grant institution, UMES also has a strong focus on agricultural research and education, making significant contributions to sustainable farming practices and food security. The university prides itself on its dedication to community service and the advancement of knowledge that benefits society at large.

Academic Programs

UMES offers over 40 undergraduate degree programs, 15 graduate programs, and eight doctoral degrees across various disciplines. Some of the university’s strongest academic programs are in the fields of agriculture, business, engineering, education, and the health sciences. Programs like aviation science and hospitality management are nationally recognized for their innovative approaches to education and real-world applicability.

One of the standout features of UMES is its small class sizes, which allow for personalized attention from professors and a strong student-faculty relationship. The university’s curriculum is designed to encourage critical thinking, creativity, and practical problem-solving skills that are essential for success in today’s workforce.

Acceptance Rate

UMES is known for being accessible to a wide range of students. The university’s acceptance rate hovers around 65%, which means it is somewhat selective but remains open to admitting students with diverse academic backgrounds. UMES values the potential for growth and development in its applicants, focusing on students who are committed to taking full advantage of the educational opportunities offered.

The admissions process considers more than just grades and test scores; the university looks at the whole student, including extracurricular activities, leadership potential, and personal essays. This holistic approach to admissions ensures that UMES is home to a diverse student body that brings various perspectives and experiences to campus life.

Cost to Attend

The cost to attend UMES is competitive compared to other universities in the region. For Maryland residents, the annual tuition and fees are approximately $8,700. Out-of-state students pay a higher rate, with annual tuition and fees averaging around $19,000. Room and board costs, depending on housing choices, can add an additional $10,000 to $12,000 to the total cost.

UMES offers a variety of financial aid options, including scholarships, grants, and loans, to help students manage the cost of attendance. Many students also benefit from work-study programs and other employment opportunities on campus that allow them to offset some of their expenses.

The university is committed to making higher education affordable, and approximately 90% of its students receive some form of financial assistance. UMES understands the financial burden that higher education can present and works closely with students to ensure that they can achieve their academic goals without incurring excessive debt.

Average SAT Scores

The average SAT scores for admitted students at UMES range from approximately 900 to 1050 out of 1600. The university requires either the SAT or ACT for admission, but it places less emphasis on standardized test scores compared to other institutions. UMES focuses more on students’ overall academic performance in high school, particularly their GPA, and their potential to succeed in college.

Students with SAT scores below this range are still encouraged to apply, as UMES considers other factors such as extracurricular involvement, community service, and personal essays. The university’s admissions team looks for students who are committed to academic growth and show promise for success in their chosen field of study.

Campus Life and Student Experience

UMES offers a vibrant campus life with a range of activities and organizations to engage students outside of the classroom. From student government and academic clubs to athletics and performing arts, there are numerous opportunities for students to develop leadership skills, pursue their passions, and build lifelong friendships.

The university’s athletic teams, known as the UMES Hawks, compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), and students are actively involved in supporting their teams. The university also has a strong focus on community service and encourages students to participate in volunteer opportunities that benefit the local area.

Diversity is a cornerstone of the UMES experience, and students from different backgrounds come together to form a close-knit and supportive community. The university fosters an inclusive environment where all students feel welcome and empowered to achieve their best.
