Is Ukraine producing drones?
Drones in the Ukraine War: The Rise of Counter-UAV Technology
As drone warfare becomes increasingly prevalent in modern conflicts, innovative solutions are emerging from unexpected quarters to counter these aerial threats. One such invention is the “Counter UAV” RPG-launched interceptor rocket, a unique anti-drone weapon developed to address the escalating challenges posed by drones in the Ukraine War.
Dan Driscoll, CEO of Tigris Digital, shed light on this remarkable invention. He emphasized, “The key to winning the anti-drone fight is ubiquitous frontline coverage of a munition as common as the rocket-propelled grenade and as affordable as the drones you’re up against.” Such a perspective underscores the gravity and immediacy of the drone menace in modern warfare scenarios.

Interestingly, the creative minds behind this project were originally immersed in an entirely different domain. The Ukraine-based team, DistributedLab, was engrossed in blockchain technology. But as the war intensified, they pivoted, leveraging their technical prowess to join forces with Tigris Digital. Driscoll reminisced, “We had a solid team in place, so when the war escalated, we just redirected our efforts towards this.”
The motivation to develop this weapon isn’t merely academic or commercial. It’s profoundly personal. A close associate of Driscoll’s was tragically killed by a Lancet Drone on the frontlines. Before his death, he had offered insights into the escalating intensity of drone warfare. His revelations painted a vivid picture of a rapidly evolving aerial battlefield. Driscoll candidly remarked, “There’s a deluge of tech becoming developed to counter drones. However, most are either ineffective or prohibitively expensive.”
Inside the Counter UAV Technology
The tech stack of the Counter UAV is impressive, a fusion of cutting-edge software and hardware.
Software Aspects:
- Rust: Utilized for 3D aerodynamics and physics simulations with the assistance of Bevy.
- TFMicro: Deployed for a neural network-based CV guidance system.
Hardware Components:
- Mainboard: Freenove ESP32-S3 WROOM
- Imaging: OV2640 camera with a resolution of 1622x1200px at 60fps.
- Sensor: Adafruit BNO055 10-DOF IMU Fusion
- Propulsion: Aerotech H45W Rocket Motor
- Miscellaneous: 4 MG90S MicroServos and a 12 Gauge Trip Alarm breach module.
Remarkably, the entire structure became 3D printed using a FormLabs 3L in Rigid10k Resin. The cost-effectiveness of the device is one of its standout features, with each unit costing approximately $300.
However, this venture hasn’t been without its financial strains!
Driscoll shared that he invested roughly $120,000 in the project. Thus, as funds dwindle, the team is actively seeking investment, donations, or any form of assistance to keep their mission alive. They fervently hope that shedding light on their endeavors through media outlets will inspire well-wishers and potential investors to rally behind their cause.

Moreover, the war in Ukraine underscores the ever-evolving nature of modern conflicts. However, with innovative solutions like the Counter UAV RPG-launched interceptor rocket, there’s renewed hope in leveling the playing field. And lastly, ensuring that defenders have the tools they need to safeguard their skies and their people.
