Upper East Side Sees Significant Drop in Crime Rates for September

In the Upper East Side, crime rates have once again shown a commendable decline, registering a drop of over 15 percent this September when juxtaposed with the figures from last year.

Recent police records indicate a 15.68 percent decline in crime for the month of September in the Upper East Side, far exceeding the drop observed across the city. In terms of specific crimes, a majority of them witnessed significant declines in the region. For instance, instances of burglary plummeted by 33.3 percent, grand larceny auto by 29.4 percent, robbery by 15.8 percent, and grand larceny saw a drop of 15.3 percent.

This trend marks a notable shift from August when crime statistics had deviated from their previously declining trajectory, reflecting a nearly 3 percent rise in major felonies as compared to the same month in 2022.

Petit larceny, or thefts valued under $1,000, also decreased by a notable 27.3 percent. Other minor offenses, like housing crimes. Which dipped by 28.6 percent! Additionally, misdemeanor assaults fell by 5.6 percent from last September’s figures.

However, not all crime categories saw a reduction. For instance, the Upper East Side reported a single rape incident in the past month. Whereas no such incident had been reported during the same period last year. Furthermore, felony assaults marked an increase of close to 19 percent in September. A figure that is slightly higher than the rise seen in August year-over-year.

While July, typically a peak month for crimes, saw a 25 percent decline in reported felony assaults, transit-related crimes experienced a spike, with three more incidents than the previous year.

Looking at the broader picture, the Upper East Side has witnessed a year-to-date reduction in major crimes by 3.47 percent, surpassing the city’s overall drop which hovers just above half-a-percent.

While the ongoing trend of decreasing crime statistics on the Upper East Side offers hope, there is still a downside.

However, it’s essential to note that major felonies have risen by almost 40 percent! When compared to figures from two years ago. And they are 39 percent higher than the data from 13 years ago! Unsettiling numbers.

However, an optimistic perspective arises when comparing current crime levels to those during the late Giuliani administration. Data suggests that in 2022, the Upper East Side saw a crime dip of nearly 30 percent when compared to 2001. Furthermore, was an impressive 46 percent lower than the figures from 1998.
