MTSU’s origins trace back to the mid-19th century when a call for a normal school emerged but was disrupted by the Civil War. The idea resurfaced in the early 20th century, culminating in the establishment of three teacher-training institutions across Tennessee. MTSU, initially a two-year teacher training program, expanded into a four-year institution by 1925, granting Bachelor of Science degrees. Over time, it transitioned into a state college and eventually achieved university status in 1965.
