Now let’s hear from a student who will attend the University of Manchester this fall:

Manchester Business School Building
I will be attending the University of Manchester this September and I have done a lot of preparation before that.
The graduate program of the University of Manchester stands out as the best asset of the university.
Without a doubt the jewel of the University of Manchester.
My undergraduate coursework equipped me with the opportunity to study financial decision problems using quantitative techniques. I have developed invaluable quantitative skills, including advanced algebra, mathematical analysis, probability theory, statistics, and econometrics, as well as mastered advanced financial techniques such as derivatives pricing, risk management and portfolio management. My interest in programming makes me proficient in Python.

My interest in quantitative came from when I took a behavioral finance course. In this course, I was introduced to the term “St Petersburg Paradox”, which taught decision makers that many paradoxical problems can be categorized as mathematical, but they are also a science of thought and a philosophy. There is a fundamental difference between decision theory and practice, which leads to the concept of human irrationality that I learned about in behavioral economics. It is essentially at odds with the ‘hypothesis of rational man’ at the heart of economics, and highlights that actual human behavior, particularly the investment behavior of individuals and organizations in the financial markets, is of great academic and practical significance.
As a finance student, I agree with the concept of “irrational man”, but I understand that relying on experience and human subjective judgment alone has very high limitations when faced with the huge stock market. Therefore I want to be able to break out of my old mindset and follow the market by trading objectively through a quantitative approach. So I am going to dedicate myself to the quantitative profession.

My junior year, I led a team in the University’s Top Analyst Equity Research Challenge and won third prize after the final roadshow. My DCF valuation modeling abilities and proficiency in the use of comparable company valuation methods played a vital role in the competition.
Through in-depth study, I found that the use of mathematics and statistics within the field of finance has been increasing substantially in the past. Besides in-class knowledge intake, I proactively searched for internship opportunities to strengthen my practical skills.

My work experiences at BlueFocus, Zhongtai Securities, CITIC and Tsinghua (Sichuan) Energy Internet Research Institute facilitated my establishing of a standardized industry working code. I have gained an insight into the financial industry as a significant derivative of economic activities, and have been able to complete industry research reports independently and participate in prospectus writing. All these experiences have laid the foundation for exploring my career and interests, giving me the confidence to plunge deeper when faced with a direction that intrigues me.

One of the things that attracted me to the University of Manchester was the fact that the university offers a Trading BootCamp Week for students studying quantitative finance, which is able to provide students with key skills. Using specialized software, students can experience a live trading platform and a week of training from two experienced traders. I believe I could engage with contemporary financial markets and apply my classroom theory in practice.
