Many depositors of Fifth Third across the country contain the same feelings in their head!

Is Fifth Third a good bank to bank with?

Is my money safe in the bank?

Well, what is the answer?

When it comes to a bank as we learned from It’s A Wonderful Life, its all about investor faith. So a bank run can theoretically wipe out even the strongest banks around!

And as well know, if we keep less than $250,000 in one account, we have the backing of the FDIC!

Let’s take a look at the biggest banks in the industry!

Below we have a chart showing unrealized depreciation on Hold to Maturity Securities (HTM) for top 100 banks versus equity.

These unrealized losses are NOT reflected in profits or a deduct to equity. Via Other Comprehensive Income (OCI) – only in the footnotes! Moreover, we don’t find these losses reflected in stress tests or measures of capital adequacy.

Furthermore a 25 bp (1/4 of 1 percent) increase in rates for a 10-year security causes approximately 2 points in losses (100 par to 98 to reflect yield discount).

Firstly, management has become quick at defending their castle!

“Fifth Third has none of the issues that are impacting some of the technology-focused banks,” Fifth Third said. “We are in a position of strength, with a strong balance sheet – capital, liquidity, securities positioning, and granular & stable deposits which have continued to grow.” This in a recently released statement by the bank!

Some great news from their annual report: “At December 31, 2022, nonperforming portfolio assets as a percent of portfolio loans and leases decreased to 0.44% compared to 0.47% at December 31, 2021.”2022-Annual-Report.pdf (q4cdn.com)

More good stuff, their equity as a percent of their overall book increased:

As we continue to comb through the annual filing we find, a growth in loans and a DROP in provision for loan loss. Which shows the strength of the loan portfolio!

We don’t see the massive loan losses on the books that sit on many other banks, coast looks clear!

Lately all we can read about these days are banks failing everywhere! Are we in a financial crisis? Now some worry Will Bank of America Collapse? And many others worry whether or not there is a Hawaii Bank Run? And of course, many others worry about the more local establishments. Will First Republic Bank Fail ?
