Allahabad University is a Public Central University situated in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India, was founded on September 23, 1887, through a legislative act and is designated as an Institute of National Importance. Known as the “Oxford of the East,” this institution is among India’s earliest modern universities. Its establishment was initially proposed by Sir William Muir, then Lt. Governor of the North-Western Provinces, in 1876, leading to the creation of Muir Central College, the predecessor of today’s university.

History?

Vizianagaram Hall in 2007 (since renovated): part of Faculty of Science

The cornerstone for Muir Central College was placed by the Governor-General of India, Lord Northbrook, on December 9, 1873. The architecture, a blend of Indo-Saracenic, Egyptian, and Gothic styles, was the work of William Emerson, who is also known for designing the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata and Crawford Market in Mumbai. Originally operating under the University of Calcutta, it transitioned to become the fifth university established under British rule in India.

The university initially served as a body for affiliating and examining graduate and postgraduate degrees and took on secondary education responsibilities. By 1904, it had set up its teaching departments and started offering doctoral research programs. The reformation into a unitary teaching and residential university came in 1921, following the Allahabad University Act of 1921, which integrated Muir Central College into the university.

Significant milestones include the recognition of local institutions as associated colleges in 1951 and the re-establishment of its central university status in 2005 through The University of Allahabad Act passed by the Indian Parliament.

Campus Description

The university’s campus, spread across Prayagraj in areas such as Old Katra and Bank Road, encompasses faculties of Science, Arts, Commerce, Law, and Management. It also includes numerous residential hostels for students.

Organization and Administration?

The governance structure features the President of India as the visitor and the Governor of Uttar Pradesh as the chief rector. The university’s daily operations are overseen by the Vice-Chancellor, while strategic decisions are made by the University Court, Executive Council, and Academic Council, among others.

In recent developments, November 2020 marked the appointment of Professor Sangita Srivastava as the university’s first female Vice-Chancellor.

Academic and Student Life:

The university is affiliated with several colleges, including the Allahabad Degree College and Ewing Christian College, among others. It faced challenges, such as the controversial integration of the Motilal Nehru Medical College, which was resolved by a High Court order in 2006. Academically, it has been rated “B++” by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council and ranked within the top 450 universities in Asia by QS World University Rankings in 2020.
