Infosys Billionaire Founder Urges Youth to Embrace 70-Hour Workweeks for Economic Growth
In a recent interview, N.R. Narayana Murthy, the 77-year-old founder of Infosys, one of India’s leading information technology giants, made a compelling call to India’s youth.
Moreover, Murthy urged them to embrace grueling 70-hour workweeks, emphasizing that such dedication was essential for India to realize its economic potential!
Murthy, who co-founded Infosys in 1981 and boasts a net worth of approximately $4.3 billion, emphasized that India currently grapples with some of the lowest productivity levels globally. To change this, he believes it is the responsibility of the country’s young workforce to transform India’s work culture.
India’s demographic landscape supports Murthy’s call for increased dedication. With roughly 66% of its population under the age of 35, India has a vast pool of young talent poised to drive economic growth and development.
Murthy stressed the need for a cultural shift towards determination, discipline, and hard work. He noted that India is currently enjoying global recognition for its rapidly growing economy, and the time is ripe to consolidate and accelerate this progress. Projections even suggest that India could become the world’s second-largest economy by 2075.
However, it’s worth noting that Indians already put in some of the longest work hours globally, averaging approximately 47.7 hours per week per employed person, according to data from the International Labour Organization (ILO). This places India seventh in the global ranking, with only a handful of countries like Qatar, Congo, Lesotho, Bhutan, Gambia, and the United Arab Emirates exceeding this average, according to the ILO.
Unsurprisingly, Murthy’s call for even longer workweeks has ignited a robust debate on social media. Critics argue that such demanding hours may lead to burnout and stifle creativity, emphasizing the importance of work-life balance.
Tech entrepreneur Vishal Gondal took to social media to respond to Murthy’s comments, saying, “Respectfully, Narayana Murthy ji, while hard work is crucial, a 70-hour work week may risk burnout and stifle creativity.”
Murthy’s call for greater dedication and work ethic serves as a reminder of the ongoing discussions surrounding work culture, productivity, and the delicate balance between hard work and personal well-being in an ever-evolving global economy.
