Ilia Bouchouev Legendary Commodities Fund Manager

QuantVision 2026: Fordham’s Quantitative Conference

Ilia Bouchouev is one of the pioneering figures in quantitative commodity derivatives trading, a mathematician turned market practitioner whose career spans the rise of modern systematic trading in global energy markets and its growing integration with academic research. As Managing Partner of Pentathlon Investments, Adjunct Professor at New York University, and Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, Bouchouev now stands at the forefront of bridging quantitative finance theory with real world trading practice.

Bouchouev began his career at a transformational moment in financial history. In 1997, armed with a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Wichita State University, he joined Koch Supply and Trading, where he helped launch one of the first quantitative commodity derivatives trading businesses. At a time when systematic methods were still emerging in energy markets, he applied mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, and risk management frameworks to commodities such as crude oil, natural gas, and refined products. Over the next 22 years, he built and led Koch’s global derivatives platform, ultimately serving as Managing Director and Global Head of Derivatives, and later as President of Koch Global Partners.

Under his leadership, Koch’s quantitative derivatives business became one of the most sophisticated and influential operations in the commodity trading world. His work helped institutionalize the use of advanced quantitative techniques in markets historically dominated by discretionary trading, contributing to the broader evolution of commodities into a data driven, model based asset class.

After more than two decades in senior trading leadership, Bouchouev transitioned into semi retirement and returned to academia with a mission to share his experience and reshape how markets are taught and understood. At New York University, he teaches graduate level courses on commodity markets and derivatives, bringing students direct insight from one of the most consequential periods in modern trading history. His role as Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies further reflects his commitment to advancing rigorous research on global energy markets.

He is also the author of Virtual Barrels: Quantitative Trading in Energy and Commodity Markets, a widely respected book that offers a rare inside look at the quantitative transformation of commodity trading. The book combines mathematical rigor with practitioner insight, making complex derivatives concepts accessible while grounding them in real world market dynamics. Through his Virtual Barrels educational platform and YouTube channel, he continues to mentor traders, researchers, and students around the world.

Bouchouev sees his mandate as building bridges between academia and industry. He believes academic research must become more practical, while trading must become more scientific. This philosophy reflects his unique position as both architect and educator of quantitative commodity markets. Through decades of leadership, teaching, and research, Ilia Bouchouev has helped define how modern commodity derivatives are traded, modeled, and understood.
