How Your Online Experience Can Benefit from Location Proxies

A bird’s eye view of the Amazon Rainforest, one of the world’s greatest natural resources. Because its vegetation continuously recycles carbon dioxide into oxygen, it has been described as the “Lungs of the Earth.” Besides being one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, it is home to a number of indigenous peoples.

Geo-restrictions might be the biggest problem of the modern internet. It used to be that you could surf the internet with all the same content as everyone else, but now it’s different. Websites adjust the information their visitors access according to the location of their IP addresses

Such privacy intrusion is not just to increase the convenience of services for users, as corporations might claim. More often than not, geo-restrictions increase the profits of online newspapers, social media sites, streaming services, and the like. Location proxies are one of the best ways to deal with this issue.

What are location proxies?

The internet works as a continuous series of requests and responses. You send a request to a web server, then it responds with the needed data, and a website is loaded. Proxies are devices, usually laptops or servers, that are set up to act as intermediary connections to the internet for other devices.

Instead of sending your request directly to the web server, you send it to a proxy first, and it then connects on your behalf. Once the required actions are done, the result is forwarded back to your device. A good proxy completes this process in seconds, so you are unlikely to feel any difference from surfing the web without one.

However, proxies still differ in many factors, and their performance is optimized for different tasks. Location proxies is a rarely used term denoting proxies optimized for accessing a certain location. They also have better-than-usual accuracy, which can help the customer to target certain neighborhoods or even streets.

Types of location proxies

Location proxies are aimed to serve people who look for proxies by location first, while the proxy type is of secondary importance. Still, these proxies, as all others, can be categorized into three main types based on the origin of IP addresses.

  • Datacenter proxies – created virtually on powerful servers in data centers, these proxies use commercial internet to achieve the best possible performance.
  • Residential proxies – focused on blending in with the crowd, residential proxies use household devices and internet connections verified by ordinary internet service providers.
  • Mobile proxies – differ from the other two types by using mobile devices, tablets, and smartphones, for example, to route connections. Best for accessing mobile-exclusive content.

The importance of location accuracy

Despite the type differences, the location plays a more central role in whether you can access the needed data and how fast the connection will be. Suppose you want to purchase a pair of limited-edition sneakers. You know that many other people will also be connecting to the website once they start to be sold.

Such goods are usually restricted to certain areas, so you’ll need a proxy server with a location that can receive such goods. Your delivery address needs to be in line with the zip code of your proxy IP address. That’s why you need an accurate location proxy, at least on a city level.

An inaccurate proxy server can raise suspicions about the website, and it might restrict your purchases, show different prices, or block your access entirely. The same goes for other use case scenarios – streaming videos, accessing social media accounts, collecting online data, and many others.

Websites are getting more and more picky in what they show for users in certain locations. It all has to do with increased profit margins, so large companies are willing to invest a lot of money in collecting visitor locations. The only way to fight back is to have an accurate location proxy.

However, it’s worth noting that other visitors can be your competitors. In the example of sneakers, someone with a faster connection might snatch them before you do. So, you need to have a proxy server as close to the website servers as possible to optimize your speed.

The closer your proxy server is, the faster it will connect because your requests will need to pass fewer networks for connection. That’s why a generally slower residential proxy can perform faster than a datacenter one if it is near the target server.

Location proxies are not only more accurate but can also be faster than proxies that are purchased by looking into the type first. If you know that the web servers you will be accessing with proxies are highly geo-restricted, start by looking into location first and then into the proxy type.

Best proxy locations

The differences between different regions where you can find proxies are getting smaller and smaller each year. Most regions are investing heavily in their network infrastructure, so speed is no longer a problem, even in more remote locations.

Still, some countries, such as China or Russia, have heavily restricted their internet access and even outlawed proxy servers. Other regions just don’t have much content worth accessing and are restricted from things that might be interesting for English-speaking visitors.

United Kingdom

Residential proxies UK are fast and welcome on every website that has an English version. The British Isles also have an excellent connection with the United States and continental Europe. Access possibilities and performance are unbeatable.

United States

Datacenter proxies in the US are best for quick connection speed when collecting data, streaming video content, or even playing video games. I haven’t found a faster proxy connection than when using datacenter proxies from New York or other well-populated states.

Indian proxies are the most cost-effective choice to access Asia-specific content. Other neighboring either don’t have many IP addresses available, or the government is restricting proxy usage, and you’ll need to invest a lot into IPs to get something out of it. India is also quickly improving its internet network, and it has great access to English-based online content.

While most proxy users look for types based on IP, there are reasons to look into location proxies. Geographical accuracy can give you a big edge in certain tasks, and it’s even more beneficial when you know what country to choose.
