How much can a McDonald’s franchise owner make a year?
Business News

McDonald’s, the largest fast-food chain worldwide, has more than 38,000 stores scattered across over 100 countries. They offer easily accessible and affordable products which have established their name globally among households. This successful brand has ignited the aspirational desire of numerous individuals to own a McDonald’s franchise, though becoming a franchisee owner is not a simple endeavor. Demanding a great deal of time, money, and knowledge, resulting in only a few being able to become an owner.
There are many reasons as to why one would decide to purchase a franchise rather than starting their own business. Name recognition is a primary reason why people decide to purchase a franchise. For instance, people around the world already recognize the name and know what to expect when entering a McDonalds which makes marketing much easier. Furthermore, a new franchisee owner would also gain access to McDonalds’ supply chain as well as receiving training and support. These benefits are not cheap however. Depending on the location of the restaurant, costs can range from $1 to $2.3 million with a quarter of it required to be from non borrowed sources.
With so many different locations, McDonald’s is primarily a franchisor.
The company’s business model consists of three major elements: a diverse menu, efficient operations, and a franchise system. The large menu of McDonald’s offers a wide range of options that cater to any taste and preference. While the base menu offers staple items such as McNuggets, the Big Mac, and fries, the company also adds items based on location to reflect regional tastes. Examples of this can include items like Singapore’s Matcha Ice Cream Cone, Germany’s McShrimp, and many others.
The second aspect of McDonald’s business model is efficient operations. The company has researched and developed how it operates in order to ensure that there is always fast service and low costs. Standardization, economies of scale, and an assembly line like operation allows the company to maintain its competitive advantage in the fast food industry. McDonald’s operates on a franchise model. This means that McDonalds itself does not own a majority of its own restaurants. Instead, about 93% of the restaurants are owned and operated by independent entrepreneurs. A big advantage of franchising is that it allows the company to leverage local knowledge and expertise to cater to varying consumer preferences across different markets.
There are many steps to becoming a franchisee.

Once one applies, it can take years before one even makes their first sale. This is because prospective franchisees must undergo training for up to 24 months to understand the operations and policies of McDonalds. Once this has become completed, one can start working with the real estate team from McDonalds to find a suitable location for the restaurant. After a location has been picked and approved, construction can start. Once the completed building has been staffed, the restaurant can finally open.
In the U.S. the average McDonalds is able to generate a staggering $2.9 million per year.
Despite this, the franchisee brings home on average between $150,000 and $250,000. This is because a majority of the sales revenue goes to paying costs associated with running a McDonalds. This can include things like, marketing, franchise fees, labor, rent, and other miscellaneous costs. The biggest expense are the operational costs which include things like labor, marketing, and utility fees. Along with this, renting the building and land can range from %8.5 to %15 of the total sales revenue. Lastly, McDonalds requires owners to pay a flat $45,000 fee plus royalties. Despite these heavy costs, the income of a franchisee varies greatly depending on various factors such as location and operational efficiency.

The primary factor that affects the franchisee’s income is the location. Restaurants located in tourist destinations or densely populated areas will generally have more sales compared to ones located in rural areas. Franchisees that own larger restaurants with more employees and higher sales will generate more income than ones with fewer employees and lower sales volumes.
Another significant factor that affects the income of the franchisee is their own experience. Franchisees who have little experience in the restaurant industry will have more trouble managing and running their business effectively. Comparatively, franchisees who are experienced at managing and owning restaurants will be able to control costs, manage their staff, and better market their business. This can lead to higher sales, lower costs, which then leads to higher profits.
Owning a McDonald’s franchise can give large financial benefits. However, there are large financial barriers to owning a restaurant.
The initial investment when opening a restaurant can range from $1 million to $2.3 million. This is determined by the size, location, construction costs. Furthermore, a quarter of these costs must come from non-borrowed personal resources which further increases the difficulty in building one of these restaurants.

Along with the financial barriers, owning a McDonald’s franchise also requires a significant time commitment. During the early stages of the business, the franchisee is expected to be actively involved in the day-to-day operation of the business. These activities include managing staff and ensuring customer satisfaction. Additionally, since McDonald’s is an ever-evolving business, franchisees are expected to adapt to changes in market trends, consumer preferences, and company policies. They are also expected to invest in new technologies and innovations, which can increase costs and lower income.
Owning a McDonalds can be a lucrative business with the average income ranging from $150,000 to $250,000. This can even become increased further by being in a strategic location and increasing efficiency. Despite the high pay, the reason there are not many franchisees is due to the large investment of time and money needed to start. Real estate isn’t cheap in America! It can cost millions of dollars and years of time before one is even able to make their first sale. Even with McDonalds’ widespread popularity, one must still find themselves determined to research and learn in order to be successful.
In conclusion, many believe there is no competitor to McDonalds’ and that it is simply the best franchise to own period!
