How many Homeless Students in NYC?
Colleges Ranking Index by Rebellion Research
In the 2023–24 academic year, New York City public schools reported a record 146,733 students experiencing homelessness. This figure represents approximately one in eight students, highlighting a significant challenge within the city’s education system.
The surge in homeless students correlates with the arrival of tens of thousands of migrant families to New York City. This influx has intensified the existing issue of student homelessness, which has persisted for years. Notably, the 2023–24 school year marked the ninth consecutive year with over 100,000 homeless students in the city’s public schools.
Homelessness among students manifests in various forms. Some reside in city shelters, while others live “doubled up,” sharing housing with other families due to economic hardship. Additionally, a portion of these students stay in hotels, motels, or other temporary accommodations.
The Bronx continues to experience the highest rate of student homelessness, with approximately one in every six students lacking stable housing. Districts such as East Harlem and Brownsville also report significant concentrations of homeless students, with about one in ten students spending time in shelters.
Addressing this issue requires comprehensive strategies that encompass housing stability, educational support, and community resources. Ensuring that all students have access to stable housing and quality education remains a critical challenge for New York City.
