Ai has endless use cases for space exploration. From deep learning to space mapping to Ai for weather prediction for launches, Ai has found a place in the new space race.

One interesting use case revolves around astronaut safety!

Microsoft and HPE have teamed up with NASA to Leverage AI and Machine learning to streamline safety in space. When Astronauts conduct spacewalks, sharp edges on handrails and handling tools and equipment can cause rips and cuts to their gloves. The spacesuits that astronauts wear is the only thing separating them from extreme temperatures and inhospitable radiation, so it is a matter of life and death to ensure the integrity of all items in a spacesuit.

The previous inspection process meant capturing images and downlinking them to earth. However “From Mars, it will take up to 20 minutes to say “hello” to someone on Earth. In addition, another 20 minutes for someone on Earth to say “hello” back. That means it could take a total of at least 40 minutes to determine if an astronaut’s glove checks out – which is simply too long to wait.”

In conclusion, the solution is an automated Glove Inspection using AI and Machine learning. Lastly, it seems there are endless pursuits for Ai in space!
