Point72 Launches Largest-Ever Internship Program for Aspiring Hedge Fund Analysts
Point72 Asset Management is embarking on its most extensive summer internship program to date, welcoming 55 aspiring hedge-fund analysts for an eight-week intensive training experience. This program, led by Jaimi Goodfriend, head of investment professional development and Point72 Academy, aims to thoroughly equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed for successful careers in finance.
A New Direction in Talent Acquisition
Jaimi Goodfriend’s arrival at Point72 nearly a decade ago marked a turning point in the hedge fund’s approach to recruiting talent. Traditionally, hedge funds depended on investment banks to source and train new talent in financial modeling and dealmaking. However, as careers in technology and startups started drawing top talent away from finance, Point72 realized it needed to take a more direct approach to developing its talent pool.
“Depending on traditional recruiting methods is like steering from the back seat,” Goodfriend explained to Business Insider! “We asked ourselves, ‘What if we took control of the wheel?'”
Under Goodfriend’s guidance, Point72 developed a summer internship and post-graduation training program that recruits directly from universities. This allows the firm to shape young professionals specifically for its own requirements and culture.

The Internship Journey: From Training to Full-Time Roles
This year’s intern cohort was selected from a record 30,000 applicants, resulting in an acceptance rate of less than 1%. Over the course of eight weeks, interns will rotate through over 35 investment teams at Point72, gaining practical experience in financial modeling, industry research, and pitching investment ideas.
The program begins with a week of introductory sessions and foundational training, including financial model evaluation and professional etiquette. Interns will quickly dive into the demanding environment of hedge fund analysis, experiencing the long hours and rigorous projects typical of the industry. They will also attend a New York Mets game, hosted by Point72 CEO Steve Cohen, who owns the team.
Goodfriend emphasizes the rigorous nature of the role. “I believe in being straightforward about the challenges of this job. It’s tough and demanding,” she said. “But for those who are passionate about markets and dedicated to understanding companies, it’s incredibly rewarding.”
Global Opportunities and Professional Development
Point72’s internship program spans beyond its New York headquarters, placing interns in 10 global offices, including Stamford, Chicago, San Francisco, West Palm Beach, Miami, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Singapore. This international scope is part of Point72’s strategy to cultivate well-rounded analysts capable of excelling in diverse markets.
Successful interns are invited to join the Point72 Academy after graduation, a 10-month program that further develops their skills and prepares them for full-time roles within the firm. Last year, about 74% of interns received offers to join the Academy, with 97% accepting the positions.
Goodfriend stresses the importance of mutual fit. “We aim to hire everyone who meets our standards. The key question is, ‘Is this the right path for you?’ By the end of the summer, the decision is usually mutual, with few surprises.”
Leading the Way in Talent Development
Point72’s proactive approach to recruiting and training reflects a broader industry trend towards investing in young talent. By taking the lead in the training process, Point72 aims to develop a pipeline of skilled analysts who are well-versed in the firm’s methodologies and culture.
In conclusion as Point72’s largest-ever intern class begins their journey, they face a challenging yet rewarding path that could lead to long-term careers at one of the world’s leading hedge funds. Laslty, for those who excel, the program offers unparalleled opportunities for professional growth and success in the financial sector.
